What is candesartan?
Candesartan is an angiotensin II blocker (ARB). It helps to control high blood pressure and has been proven to reduce the rate of mortality in heart failure patients. The angiotensin II enzyme increases intracellular calcium levels which causes contractions in vascular smooth muscle tissue which raises blood pressure. Additionally, angiotensin II indirectly increases blood volume which also raises blood pressure. By blocking this enzyme, candesartan is able to reduce blood pressure in many patients.
How do I take candesartan?
Candesartan comes in the form of a tablet, and it may be taken once or twice per day. Your doctor will prescribe the right dosage for your individual requirements. Take your medication at the same time every day. Your doctor may slowly increase your dose over time until blood pressure control is achieved.
Before taking candesartan, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in the candesartan drug.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have diabetes.
- You are taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, including other blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, diuretics, cholesterol medications, aspirin, NSAIDs, lithium and any supplements with potassium.
- You are dehydrated or frequently get dehydrated.
What are the possible side effects of taking candesartan?
Possible candesartan drug side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, feeling light-headed, runny nose and sore throat. These side effects should get better over time. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor. Rare but serious side effects that you should see a doctor about immediately include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, fainting, changes in urination, and yellow skin or eyes.
What if I forget to take a dose of candesartan?
If you forget to take your candesartan dose, take the missed dose whenever you remember it unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine.
How do I store candesartan?
Keep candesartan tightly closed in the container it came in, and store it at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on candesartan?
Signs of candesartan overdose include fast or slow heart rate, low blood pressure, dizziness and fainting. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on candesartan, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the person is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
Candesartan can make you feel dizzy. To reduce this effect, get up slowly from a reclining position and be sure to stay hydrated. Do not drive until you know how this drug affects you.
