What is cefadroxil?

Cefadroxil is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as skin, throat, and urinary tract infections. Cefadroxil belongs to a family of antibiotics known as cephalosporins.

 

How do I take cefadroxil?

Buy cefadroxil at your local pharmacy using our discount coupons. This medication comes in a capsule, tablet, or a liquid form meant to be taken by mouth.  Typically the dosage is to take every 12 hours for 7-10 days. Take cefadroxil exactly as directed by your doctor. Make sure that if you are taking the liquid form to shake well before each use. Cefadroxil capsules and tablets should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water.

As with most antibiotics, even if you are feeling better, continue taking until the medication is gone unless otherwise directed by your doctor. 

Before taking cefadroxil, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to cefadroxil or any other cephalosporin antibiotic such as cefaclor, cephalexin, or penicillin
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications especially other antibiotics, blood thinners like warfarin, probenecid, or any vitamins.
  • You have or have ever had kidney or liver disease, colitis, or stomach problems
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, notify your doctor or dentist that you are taking cefadroxil

What are the possible side effects of taking cefadroxil?

More serious side effects that require contacting your doctor immediately include: diarrhea that is watery or bloody, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising, seizures, pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness, swollen glands, rash or itching, joint pain, sore throat, severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash, increased thirst, loss of appetite, weight gain, difficulty breathing, urinating less than usual or not at all.

Less serious side effects that you should still mention to your doctor include:

nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, mild diarrhea; stiff or tight muscles, restless or hyperactivity, an unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth, mild itching, skin rash, or

vaginal itching or discharge.

What if I forget to take a dose of cefadroxil?

If you miss a dose of cefadroxil, take it as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do take double doses.

How do I store cefadroxil?

Cefadroxil should be stored in the container it came in, closed tightly, and out of reach of children. The capsules and tablets should be stored at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Discard any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep liquid medicine in the refrigerator, tightly closed. Do not freeze.

 

What happens if I overdose on cefadroxil?

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center. A very serious symptom of cefadroxil overdose is seizures.

Warnings

It is important to complete the full course of cefadroxil. It is common to feel better before completing, but it is important to finish this medication as prescribed.  People with severe kidney problems or a history of gastrointestinal disease be aware of how this medication may affect their medical condition and determine whether any special monitoring is needed. Cefadroxil, like other antibiotics, can cause a growth of organisms that they don't kill, such as yeast that can lead to vaginitis. Cefadroxil has been associated with a serious, diarrhea-causing infection called pseudomembranous colitis. It can occur as late as 2 months after your last dose the last dose. If you have severe diarrhea, with or without fever or blood, after taking cefadroxil, get medical attention as soon as possible. Cefadroxil has also been associated with several serious skin conditions. If you notice symptoms including a rash, itching, blistering, or peeling skin, stop taking this medication and contact your doctor right away.
