What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a group of disorders that are characterized by a breakdown of mental and emotional order. There are a variety of symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, and disordered thinking and behavior. These can cause sufferers to talk to themselves, make little sense when talking to others, or even just sit motionless and silent for hours. The effects often make it difficult to function socially and professionally.

How can I manage Schizophrenia?

Antipsychotic Medication

Schizophrenia medication is often the first line of defense in combating the effects of the disease. Antipsychotics are often helpful in treating the positive effects of the disease like hallucinations and delusions. However, many of the more hidden symptoms are unaffected by this form of schizophrenia medication. Combining this treatment with psychosocial treatments can provide a much more thorough treatment.

Psychosocial Treatments

There are a wide variety of psychosocial treatments for schizophrenia including family therapy, assertive community treatment, cognitive remediation and skills training. Each of these seeks to help the schizophrenia sufferer adapt to the functioning in social and/or professional life. This is often most effective in conjunction with medicine for schizophrenia.

What are the different types of Schizophrenia Medications?

Typical Antipsychotics

Typical Antipsychotics were developed in the 1950’s and are still commonly prescribed today. They function to reduce the number of occurrence of hallucinations and delusions. They are often prescribed as a treatment for schizophrenia because they are less expensive than the newer, atypical antipsychotics. However, they have the risk of significant side effects, including movement disorders that may or may not be reversible.

Atypical Antipsychotics

Atypical Antipsychotics are a newer version of antipsychotics that are generally preferred because they have a lower risk of debilitating side effects. The common side effects include weight gain, diabetes, and high cholesterol. They do tend to be more expensive than typical antipsychotics.

What are the symptoms of Schizophrenia?

The symptoms of schizophrenia are separated into two general categories; positive symptoms and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are distortions of normal functions such as delusions, hallucinations, thought disorder, and disorganized behavior. Negative symptoms are those that result from the diminishing or absence of a normal function such as loss of interest in everyday activities, appearing to lack emotions, reduced ability to carry out normal functions, neglect of personal hygiene, and loss of motivation.

Thorazine Information

Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) is a typical antipsychotic, and is actually the first drug developed with antipsychotic action. It works on a variety of receptors in the central nervous system as a sedative and anti-anxiety medication. It is recommended most often for short term management of severe episodes. Some common side effects are sedation, slurred speech, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention and possible lowering of the seizure threshold.

Risperidone Information

As an atypical antipsychotic, risperidone is a treatment that can reduce the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. There is some indication that this schizophrenia medication can help in the first few weeks of taking it, but its effects are mostly long term. Common side effects are significant weight gain and metabolic problems.

Invega Information

Paliperidone (Invega) is an atypical antipsychotic that is used for long-term treatment of schizophrenia through a once daily dosage. The most common side effects are restlessness and involuntary movements. When taken with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, sexual dysfunction can be a side effect.
