Cortifoam Information:

What is Cortifoam?

Cortifoam contains a topical steroid medication called hydrocortisone. It is administered rectally to treat inflammation and itching caused by ulcerative colitis and other conditions that might cause these symptoms in the rectal area or lower intestines.

How do I take Cortifoam?

Cortifoam comes with a special rectal applicator. Use this applicator as per your pharmacist’s instructions. Your dosage will depend on the condition you are treating. For most cases of ulcerative colitis, the dosage is 100mg nightly for 21 days. In some cases, up to three months of treatment may be required. In most cases, symptoms should improve within three to five days. If symptoms do not improve within two weeks, tell your doctor. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for your particular condition. For more detailed instructions, call your pharmacist and ask for Cortifoam prescription assistance.

Before using Cortifoam, tell your doctor if:

  • You have kidney disease.
  • You have high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • You have myasthenia gravis.
  • You have or have ever had tuberculosis.
  • You have a fever or any type of infection.
  • You have had a colostomy or ileostomy.
  • You have diverticulitis or stomach ulcers.
  • You have congestive heart failure.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Cortifoam.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are using any other prescription or nonprescription drugs.

What are the possible side effects of taking Cortifoam?

Possible side effects from using Cortifoam include itching, pain, diarrhea, dryness or burning sensation at the site of application. If pain is severe or you experience rectal bleeding that was not a previous symptom of your condition, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

What if I forget to take a dose of Cortifoam?

If you forget to use a dose of Cortifoam, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next schedule dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal regimen. Do not use a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Cortifoam?

Store Cortifoam in a cool, dry place and keep the canister away from heat, flame, direct sunlight and freezing temperatures. The contents of the canister are under pressure and may explode if punctured or exposed to extreme temperatures.

What happens if I overdose on Cortifoam?

Overuse of Cortifoam could result in exaggerated side effects. If you think you are using too much, talk to y-our doctor. If someone accidentally ingests Cortifoam, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

When used for extensive periods, corticosteroids can reduce the body’s ability to fight infections on its own. They can also increase the risk of developing osteoporosis when used for long periods of time. Cortifoam is for rectal use only.
