Dovonex Information:
What is Dovonex?
Dovonex is a brand-name medication that contains the ingredient calcipotriene. Calcipotriene is a vitamin D analogue that has been proven to be effective in clearing psoriasis lesions. The medication is absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. The way it works is not completely understood, but it seems to have an effect on T-cells which slows the rapid skin cell proliferation that occurs with psoriasis.
How do I take Dovonex?
Dovonex is usually applied to affected areas twice daily. Follow your doctor’s instructions for how often you should use Dovonex cream. Wash your hands before each application. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected areas and gently rub it in until it has been absorbed, then wash your hands again. This medication should not be used on the face or anywhere near the eyes.
Before taking Dovonex, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dovonex cream.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements.
- You have high levels of calcium or vitamin D.
- You have any other medical conditions, especially other skin conditions.
What are the possible side effects of taking Dovonex?
Possible side effects from taking Dovonex include burning, itching, irritation, dry skin and peeling at the site of application. If these side effects are severe or don’t get better overtime, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that should be reported immediately include thinning or discolored skin, stretch marks, bumps, mood changes, constipation and fatigue.
What if I forget to take a dose of Dovonex?
If you forget to apply a dose of Dovonex, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed application and continue on your regular routine. Do not apply two consecutive doses to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Dovonex?
Make sure the tube of Dovonex cream is tightly closed. Store it at a room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Dovonex?
Overdose on Dovonex is not likely. Chronic and excessive use may result in hypercalcemia. Signs of hypercalcemia include nausea, constipation, pain in the sides or back, frequent urination, thirst, twitching, weakness and lack of appetite. If someone accidentally ingests Dovonex, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
