Dutoprol Information:
What is Dutoprol?
Dutoprol is an anti-hypertension prescription medication that combines the beta-blocker metoprolol with hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic. Metoprolol affects the heart and improves blood flow through the arteries and veins while hydrochlorothiazide reduces fluid retention by limiting salt absorption, allowing the body to pass it out of the system in urine.
How do I take Dutoprol?
Dutoprol is administered in tablet form and is taken orally once a day, with or without food and with an approved liquid. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush it or chew it. This medication may be administered in conjunction with other medications for treating hypertension and its dosage strength may be increased over the treatment period. Follow the dosing instructions exactly; if you have any questions, contact your healthcare provider for Dutoprol prescription assistance. Because this medication does not cure hypertension, continue taking it even if you are feeling well.
Before taking Dutoprol, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to metoprolol, hydrochlorothiazide, penicillin, sulfonamide antibiotics, or any of the ingredients in Dutoprol
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking NSAIDS, oral diabetes medications, ritonavir, reserpine, ranitidine, medications for hypertension, lithium, insulin, corticosteroids, terbinafine, thioradazine, cholestyramine, colestipol, quinidine, propafenone, paroxetine, fluoxetine hydroxychloroquine, diphenhydramine, cimetidine, bupropion, or barbiturates
- You have, or have had, asthma, diabetes, gout, heart disease, heart failure, bradycardia, high cholesterol, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, pheochromocytoma, problems with blood circulation, severe allergies, or systemic lupus erythematosus
What are the possible side effects of taking Dutoprol?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Dutoprol. Less severe symptoms include cold hands or feet, constipation, depression, diarrhea, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, dry mouth, increased urination, gas, bloating, hair loss, headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, runny nose, stomach pain, tiredness, or vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficult breathing or swallowing), blistered or peeling skin, vision changes, eye pain, swollen or red eyes, dry mouth, thirst, feeling weak, tired, or drowsy; restlessness, confusion, muscle pain or cramps, tachycardia, signs of dehydration or and electrolyte imbalance, fainting, swollen or painful joints, continuous pain beginning in the stomach area and spreading to the back, shortness of breath or wheezing, unusual bleeding or bruising, or weight gain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Dutoprol?
If you forget to take Dutoprol, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of pills taken or alter the schedule to make up for having missed a dose.
How do I store Dutoprol?
Keep Dutoprol tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Dutoprol?
If an overdose of the Dutoprol drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include difficulty breathing or swallowing, dizziness, or swelling of the extremities.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Dutoprol. This medication may cause orthostatic hypotension.
