Econazole Information:

What is econazole?

Econazole is an antifungal drug prescribed to treat skin infections such as tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea versicolor (a skin discoloration) and others. It works by fighting infections caused by yeast or fungus.

How do I take econazole?

Econazole is a topical cream that is applied to the skin once or twice a day for at least two weeks. However, the frequency of application and length of treatment will be determined by the doctor based on the severity of the condition being treated; follow your doctor’s instruction exactly. Before using econazole, thoroughly clean and dry the affected area, then apply just enough of the medication to cover the site, gently massage it into the skin until it disappears. Wash your hands after applying.

Before taking econazole, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to econazole or any of the ingredients in the medication
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

What are the possible side effects of taking econazole?

Some people have reported side effects after applying econazole. Less severe symptoms include burning, stinging, redness, mild itching, or irritation to the skin where it is applied. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (severe rash, hives, severe or persistent itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing).

What if I forget to take a dose of econazole?

If you forget to apply your scheduled dose of econazole, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount or change the schedule to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store econazole?

Keep econazole tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the cream to freeze. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on econazole?

Econazole is for topical application only. If it is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Econazole is for external use only. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication.
