What is Elocon?
Elocon medicines contain a corticosteroid drug called mometasone. Mometasone is a medium-strength corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation and relieving itching. Elocon lotion, cream or ointment may be prescribed to treat different kinds of dermatoses, such as psoriasis.
How do I use Elocon?
Elocon cream, ointment or lotion is normally applied once daily and should be applied at the same time every day. You may use more or less depending on your condition. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Wash your hands before applying Elocon. Apply a small amount to the affected area(s). A thin film of the cream or ointment may remain after applied. The lotion should be massaged into the skin until it disappears. Wash your hands again after applying the medication. If your symptoms don’t improve within two weeks, tell your doctor or dermatologist.
Before using Elocon, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have diabetes.
- You have a skin infection on or near the affected area(s).
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Elocon.
What are the possible side effects of using Elocon?
Possible side effects from using Elocon include a mild stinging, burning or itching sensation after applying the medication. This should go away after a short time. If these side effects persist, tell your doctor or dermatologist. Other side effects may include acne, stretch marks, and swollen hair follicles at the site of application. Tell your doctor about any of these side effects or if you experience an allergic reaction.
What if I forget to apply a dose of Elocon?
If you forget to apply a dose of Elocon, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and then continue your normal routine. Do not apply consecutive doses to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Elocon?
Store Elocon cream, lotion or ointment tightly closed in its container. Keep it at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep it out of direct light or excessive heat. Try to keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Elocon?
Overuse or extended use of Elocon can cause too much of the corticosteroid to be absorbed into your system. Signs of this include headache, weight loss, thinning skin, unusual fatigue and susceptibility to infections. If you think you are using too much of this drug, tell your doctor. If someone accidentally ingests Elocon, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Do not apply Elocon to the face, under the arms or near the groin. Elocon is for topical use only.
