Evista Information:

What is Evista?

Evista is an estrogen agonist, meaning that it acts like an estrogen hormone in some parts of the body but does not affect the breast and uterus or prevent menopause symptoms like hot flashes. It helps prevent and treat osteoporosis by reducing calcium loss in bones, which preserves bone mass and reduces the risk of fractures.

How do I take Evista?

Evista is usually taken by mouth with or without food once a day (unless your doctor has given you different directions). Try to take this medication at the same time every day to help you remember it.

Before taking Evista, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You have any other known allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, especially cholestyramine or estrogen
  • You are a smoker
  • You have a history of blood clots
  • You will be sitting or on bedrest for an extended period of time (e.g. you are going on a long flight or undergoing surgery)
  • You have a history of kidney or liver disease
  • You have high blood pressure or a heart/blood vessel disease
  • You have or have ever had cancer
  • You have high blood cholesterol levels
  • You have a history of high blood fat levels caused by estrogen treatment
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or think you may be pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Evista?

As an estrogen agonist, Evista may sometimes cause sweating, hot flashes, or leg cramps. Let your doctor know if any of these side effects persist or interfere with your day-to-day activities. In very rare cases, Evista can cause blood clots to form. Get immediate medical attention if you experience any signs of a blood clot or stroke, including leg pain or swelling, chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe headache, confusion, sudden vision changes, or weakness on one side of your body.

What if I forget to take a dose of Evista?

If you miss a dose of Evista, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your usual dosing schedule.

How do I store Evista?

Keep Evista at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit), away from light and moisture. Keep all medications out of reach of pets and children. If this medication has expired or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Evista?

If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on the Evista drug, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Warnings

Because Evista can increase your likelihood for developing blood clots, it is important to be able to move periodically and keep the blood flowing through your body. When traveling or working at a desk, make sure to stand up and move periodically. If you are going to be on bedrest due to surgery, do not start taking the Evista drug until you are active again.

Brand Names

Evista is the brand name form of the generic drug raloxifene. The generic form is typically slightly less expensive, but if your doctor has determined that you should use the brand name form, claim your HelpRx Evista coupon to reduce the cost.
