Flovent Hfa Information:

What is Flovent HFA?

Flovent HFA is the adrenal glucocorticoid fluticasone, prescribed to help prevent asthma attacks and its associated symptoms (chest tightness, coughing, difficulty breathing, and wheezing). It is an anti-inflammatory, preventing the release of the substances that cause swelling in the lungs and airways in order to make breathing easier. It is not a rescue medication, meaning it should not be used to stop an attack.

How do I take Flovent HFA?

Flovent HFA is dispensed using an aerosol inhaler, usually two times a day. When using this medication for the first time, ask your healthcare provider for instructions on proper use. Track the number of uses, and do not exceed the prescribed limit for a given inhaler, as indicated on the canister. Before using, shake the canister thoroughly. For first time use, prime the inhaler by releasing four test sprays. When using, exhale before placing the mouthpiece between your lips; press down firmly on the inhaler and breathe deeply through your mouth. Release the canister, remove the inhaler, and hold your breath for ten seconds. If you have been prescribed more than one inhalation per treatment, wait thirty seconds between doses. Rinse your mouth and spit out the water; do not swallow it.

Before taking Flovent HFA, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to fluticasone or any of the ingredients in Flovent HFA
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing
  • You are using other inhaled medications
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking amiodarone, HIV protease inhibitors, hormonal contraceptives, antifungals, or oral steroids
  • You are taking nefazodone, clarithromycin, fluoxetine, troleandomycin, zafirlukast, cyclosporine, metronidazole, danazol, diltiazem, delavirdine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, verapamil, isoniazid, and cimetidine
  • You have, or have had, tuberculosis, liver disease, or untreated infections
  • You have, or have had, glaucoma, cataracts, or herpes infections of the eye

What are the possible side effects of taking Flovent HFA?

Some individuals have reported side effects after using Flovent HFA, some more severe than others. Less severe side effects include speaking problems, headache, painful white patches in the throat or mouth, stuffy or runny nose, and sore throat. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include anxiety, chest tightness or pain, coughing, depression, signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), an enlarged face or neck, extreme fatigue, increased facial hair growth, changes to menstrual cycle, acne, fluid-filled or red bumps on the skin, or purple or pink stretch marks.

What if I forget to take a dose of Flovent HFA?

If a dose of Flovent HFA is missed, skip it and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or take multiple doses to make up for the one that was missed.

How do I store Flovent HFA?

Keep Flovent HFA tightly sealed in its original packaging, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity, and out of the reach of children. Store it with the mouthpiece down. Keep the medication out of direct sunlight and do not allow it to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired Flovent HFA according to the recommendations of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Flovent HFA?

If an overdose of Flovent HFA is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or collapsed, contact Emergency Services at 911.

This medication may decrease the body’s ability to cope with stress or recover from surgery or an injury. Call your doctor if you become pregnant while using Flovent HFA. Do not use the inhaler near an open flame.
