Fluocinonide Information:

What is fluocinonide?

Fluocinonide is a corticosteroid medication that is applied to the skin to stop itching, inflammation, redness, and irritation. The potency of fluocinonide ranges from potent to super potent, depending on the percentage of the active ingredient in each product. There are seven classes of potency of corticosteroids, and fluocinonide is in the top two. Topical corticosteroids have several effects on skin cells that work to treat a variety of skin conditions from infection to allergic reaction. They stop inflammation on several fronts including vasoconstriction, inhibiting the inflammatory response of white blood cells, and inhibiting the production of arachidonic acid which is necessary to produce enzymes that cause inflammation. Topical corticosteroids also slow down the cell proliferation and turnover that is common with autoimmune conditions such as allergic reaction and psoriasis.

How do I take fluocinonide?

You can buy fluocinonide as a cream, ointment, gel, or topical solution at your local pharmacy. This medication is usually applied two to four times a day depending on your condition. Follow your doctor’s instructions for treatment. Do not apply medication to broken skin. To apply fluocinonide, wash the affected area and your hands first. Then apply a thin layer of medication over the area. Wash your hands after applying. Allow the medication to soak in and avoid rubbing or washing the affected area for several hours. Normally you will not cover or bandage the medicated area, but for some conditions, your doctor may recommend that you cover the affected area with plastic wrap after applying the medication. This allows for greater quantities of fluocinonide to be absorbed. This is not necessary in most cases and not recommended for young children.

Before taking fluocinonide, tell your doctor if:

  • You have recently had a vaccine.
  • You have tuberculosis, measles, chicken pox, or shingles.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially chemotherapy and topical medications.
  • You are fighting an infection.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • You have a history of diabetes, glaucoma, or cataracts.
  • You have an immune disorder or a circulatory disorder.
  • You are allergic to fluocinonide, other corticosteroids, or any of the other ingredients in your type of fluocinonide medication.

What are the possible side effects of taking fluocinonide?

Possible side effects from using topical fluocinonide include an itching or burning sensation, acne, irritation or redness, inflamed hair follicles, skin discoloration, dry skin, irritation around the mouth, sensitivity to the sun, especially if this medication is used on the face. If your skin becomes severely irritated, you have trouble sleeping, you have an allergic reaction, or you experience puffiness or swelling, stop using the medication at once and contact your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of fluocinonide?

If you miss a dose of fluocinonide, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply two doses simultaneously or consecutively. Regular application of this medication is essential to recovery.

How do I store fluocinonide?

Store fluocinonide tightly closed in its container away from excessive heat. Keep your medication away from children and pets and dispose of any expired medication.

What happens if I overdose on fluocinonide?

Overdose on topical fluocinonide is not likely. Excessive use of fluocinonide can result in increased side effects and conditions that result from overuse of corticosteroids. See the additional information section. If fluocinonide is accidently ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Prolonged or excessive use of corticosteroids such as fluocinonide can lead to HPA axis suppression, Cushing’s syndrome, and hyperglycemia. They can also reduce the body’s ability to fight infection on its own. Children tend to absorb topical corticosteroids in larger quantities than adults.
