Genvoya is a drug combination of many active ingredients including cobicistat, elvitegravir, emtricitabine and tenofovir. Elvitegravir, emtricitabine and tenofovir prevent HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) cells from multiplying within the body. HIV is known to cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Genvoya can be employed to treat HIV. However, it is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

How do I take Genvoya?

Medications like Genvoya are usually taken by tablet once per day. Follow directions provided on the prescription label exactly. Do not take more or less than the prescribed amount of medication or take medicine for shorter or longer periods than prescribed. Take with food. Using Genvoya regularly provides the largest benefit. Do not change dosages or schedules without the advice of a medical professional.

Before taking Genvoya, tell your doctor if:

  • You have liver or kidney disease
  • You have osteopenia
  • You have a history of hepatitis B infection.
  • You are taking Alfuzosin, seizure medicine, ergot medicine, St. John's wort, lovastatin, simvastatin, oral midazolam or triazolam, pimozide, rifampin, or sildenafil
  • You have any food or drug allergies

What are the possible side effects of taking Genvoya?

Use of the drug Genvoya is associated with common side effects that may include diarrhea, nausea, or changes in the shape or location of body fat. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience kidney or liver problems, signs of a new infection, chest pain, dry cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, cold sores, sores on your genital or anal area, rapid heart rate, anxiousness, irritability, weakness or prickly feeling, problems with balance or eye movement, trouble speaking or swallowing, severe lower back pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, or swelling in your neck or throat (enlarged thyroid), menstrual changes, impotence, or loss of interest in sex.

What if I forget to take a dose of Genvoya?

Take the dose that you missed as soon as you remember. Be sure to skip any missed doses if it is almost time for your next dose. Never take extra medicine to make up for any missed doses.

How do I store Genvoya?

What happens if I overdose on Genvoya?

An overdose of Genvoya can cause serious, permanent damage to your body. Seek emergency medical help or call the Poison Control line at 1-800-222-1222 if you experience any of the severe side effects listed above.

Seek medical help even for mild symptoms. Genvoya can also harm your liver. If you have hepatitis B, it is possible that you may develop liver symptoms after you stop taking this medicine. Have your doctor check your liver function for several months after treatment.
