What is Tivicay?
Tivicay works with certain other medications to reduce the amount of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the blood. It also helps strengthen the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells in the body. It is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.
How do I take Tivicay?
Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions for using Tivicay and any other HIV drugs you have been prescribed. Take Tivicay by mouth with or without food. Because you will need to take this medication on a regular basis, you should always refill your prescription before you run out of tablets.
Before taking Tivicay, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Tivicay or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially other HIV medications, iron or calcium supplements, anti-seizure medications, metformin, rifampin, or antacids
- You have any kind of liver problems (especially hepatitis B or C)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Tivicay?
Serious side effects of Tivicay are rare, but it is important to be aware of them so that you can get emergency medical help if necessary. Get immediate medical attention if you have any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, jaundice, dark urine, loss of appetite, facial swelling, fever, unusual tiredness, muscle or joint aches, eye redness or swelling, mouth sores, or difficulty breathing. More common side effects may include headaches, difficulty sleeping, and changes in the location of body fat. These milder side effects usually aren’t cause for concern, but let your doctor know if you have any side effects that persist or get worse.
What if I forget to take a dose of Tivicay?
It is very important to take your HIV medications consistently in order to control the virus. If you do forget to take Tivicay, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless there are fewer than four hours until your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule.
How do I store Tivicay?
Keep Tivicay at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. Make sure the Tivicay drug and all other prescription medications you have are out of sight and reach of any pets or children in your home.
What happens if I overdose on Tivicay?
Do not take more of the Tivicay drug than your doctor has prescribed, and do not share your medication with anyone else. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately.
Warnings
Tivicay does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people; if you have HIV, avoid having unprotected sex or sharing needles or personal items with bodily fluids on them. Talk to your doctor about all the other medications you are taking, as certain drugs can have dangerous interactions with Tivicay.
