What is Glucophage XR?

Glucophage XR is a medication prescribed, along with diet and exercise, to help treat Type 2 diabetes; it is not used to treat Type 1 diabetes. Glucophage XR is in the biguanide class of medications and works by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and the amount absorbed from food; it may also improve the body’s response to insulin. Glucophage XR may also be prescribed in combination with other medications, including insulin.

How do I take Glucophage XR?

Glucophage XR is administered in tablet form and is taken orally once a day with the evening meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not split, crush, or chew it. You doctor may adjust the dosage over time. This medication does not cure diabetes; continue to take it even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Glucophage XR without first consulting your healthcare provider. You must continue to monitor your blood sugar while taking this medication.

Before taking Glucophage XR, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to metformin or any of the ingredients in Glucophage XR
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are in as state of diabetic ketoacidosis
  • You are eighty years old or older
  • You will be having x-rays or any type of treatment that requires dye being injected into your veins
  • You are taking zonisamide, acetazolamide, vancomycin, niacin, amiloride, cimetidine, morphine, digoxin, trimethoprim, furosemide, triamterene, isoniazid, phenytoin, topiramate, ranitidine, procainamide, quinine, or quinidine
  • You are taking ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, insulin or other diabetes medications, calcium channel blockers, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, oral steroids, or diuretics medications for mental illness and nausea; 
  • You are taking medications to treat thyroid disease, asthma, colds, mental illness, or nausea
  • You have, or have had, a stroke, heart attack, coma, or heart, kidney, or liver disease
  • Your diet or exercise patterns have changed
  • You will be undergoing any type of surgery, including dental

What are the possible side effects of taking Glucophage XR?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Glucophage XR. Less severe symptoms include bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, headache, heartburn, indigestion, muscle pain, changes to finger or toenails, stomach pain, or an unpleasant metallic taste in mouth. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), or chest pain.

What if I forget to take a dose of Glucophage XR?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Glucophage XR, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose of this medication, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number or tablets taken or change the schedule to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store Glucophage XR?

Keep Glucophage XR tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Glucophage XR?

If an overdose of Glucophage XR is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include hypoglycemia, tachycardia, bradycardia, decreased appetite, deep, rapid breathing, general discomfort dizziness, extreme fatigue or tiredness, chills, flushed skin, lightheadedness, muscle pain, nausea, shortness of breath, stomach pain, vomiting, or weakness.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Glucophage XR. This medication may cause blood sugar levels to change. Glucophage XR cause lactic acidosis and drinking alcohol while taking this medication increases the risk of developing lactic acidosis.

Glucophage XR is the extended-release version of the diabetes drug metformin. It is also available under other brand names including Fortamet, Riomet, Glumetza, Glucophage, as well as brands in which it is combined with other drugs.
