Januvia Information:

What is Januvia?

Januvia, or sitagliptin, is classified as a gliptin or DDP-4 inhibitor drug. Januvia increases insulin production and reduces blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes. Gliptins work by blocking the production of the enzyme DDP-4 in the body. One of the functions of the DDP-4 enzyme is to break down incretins. Incretins cause beta cells to release insulin in the body after eating. By inhibiting DDP-4, incretins are allowed to increase insulin production while secretion of glucagon is simultaneously decreased in the pancreas. This leads to a reduction in blood glucose levels.

How do I take Januvia?

Use our free Januvia discount coupons or Januvia patient assistance to buy your medication in your local pharmacy. This medication comes in 25, 50, or 100mg tablets. The typical dosage of Januvia is 100mg once daily, but follow instructions given to you by your doctor to meet your individual requirements. This medication may be taken with or without food. Do not crush, break, or chew Januvia tablets as you may damage the extended release mechanism.  This medication should be taken along with adhering to a diet and exercise program. Check your blood sugar level regularly. Januvia may be taken with other diabetes medications. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions when using Januvia with other drugs. You may be required to have regularly scheduled lab tests while taking this medication to monitor kidney function, hemoglobin, and glucose levels. For your own safety, be sure to keep all of these appointments.

Before taking Januvia, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have ever had pancreatitis or pancreas problems.
  • You have high cholesterol or high triglycerides.
  • You have a history of swelling or angioedema.
  • You have a history of kidney disease or kidney problems.
  • You have ever had gall stones.
  • You frequently drink alcoholic beverages.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or herbal supplements, especially nilotibib, lomitapide, simeprevir, tocophersolan, NSAIDs, MAO inhibitors, sulfonamides, and other diabetes medications.
  • You are allergic to gliptins or any of the ingredients in this medication.

What are the possible side effects of taking Januvia?

Possible side effects from taking Januvia include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, upset stomach, decreased urination, and an inflamed pancreas. Januvia may cause pancreatitis. An increased risk of pancreatic cancer is currently being studied. Signs of pancreatitis include severe pain in the upper-left abdomen that can sometimes spread through the back, nausea, and vomiting that gets more severe after eating. If you experience signs of pancreatitis, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of Januvia?

If you miss a dose of Januvia, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take Januvia tablets more than once a day unless specifically instructed to do so by your doctor.

How do I store Januvia?

Store Januvia in an airtight container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Januvia?

Signs of overdose on Januvia include those of low blood sugar such as weakness, sweating, tremors, confusion, blurred vision, and even convulsions. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Januvia, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222, or call 911.

Warnings

In rare cases, Januvia may cause hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, especially when taken along with other diabetes medications. Know the signs of hypoglycemia and carry candy or sugar tablets with you. Limit your alcohol intake as it can increase the chance of dangerous side effects. Attend all scheduled lab appointments while taking Januvia.

Januvia is currently the only sitagliptin medication available on the market as it is still protected under patent. As a result, Januvia’s retail cost can be high.
