What is Hecoria?
Hecoria is the drug tacrolimus, an immunosuppressant prescribed along with other medications to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. It works by decreasing the activity of the immune system in order to prevent the body from attacking the transplanted organ(s). Hecoria may also be prescribed to treat fistulizing Crohn’s disease.
How do I take Hecoria?
Hecoria is administered as a capsule is taken orally, typically twice a day with water. However, the frequency and strength of dosing will be determined by the patient’s medical profile. Continue to take this medication until otherwise directed by your doctor. Do not stop taking it even if you feel well.
Before taking Hecoria, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to tacrolimus or any of the ingredients in Hecoria
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have recently stopped taking cyclosporine
- You are taking antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, antibiotics, hormonal contraceptives, medications to treat seizures, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, or antacids
- You are taking bromocriptine, amphotericin B, sirolimus, cisapride, rifampin, chloramphenicol, rifabutin, cimetidine; ganciclovir, danazol, cisplatin; lansoprazole, omeprazole, nefazodone, metoclopramide, or methylprednisolone
- You have a disorder of the immune system
- You have, or have had, diabetes, hypertension, liver, heart, or kidney disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Hecoria?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Hecoria. Less severe symptoms include pain in the joints or back; numb, burning, or tingling extremities; constipation; diarrhea; sleep difficulties; dizziness; headache; heartburn; diminished appetite; nausea; stomach pain; bodily tremors; vomiting; weakness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, seek Hecoria patient assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); coma; painful, burning, or decreased urination; seizures; swelling of the extremities; unusual bleeding or bruising; weight gain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Hecoria?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Hecoria, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of capsules taken or alter the schedule to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Hecoria?
Keep Hecoria tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused capsules according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Hecoria?
If an overdose of Hecoria is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Hecoria patient assistance. Signs of an overdose include drowsiness and hives.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Hecoria. This medication may increase the risk of skin cancer, lymphoma, and other cancers, especially those that begin in the immune system. Hecoria increases the risk of developing diabetes. This medications increases the risk of developing a serious infection. Hecoria may cause hypertension. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Do not receive any vaccinations without the approval of your healthcare provider.

Hecoria is a brand name of the drug tacrolimus and is also marketed as Prograf, Protopic, Astragraf XL, and Envarsus XR; however, the formulations vary and one should not be substituted for another without written medical permission.
