Irbesartan Information:

What is irbesartan?

Irbesartan is a prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure and kidney disease in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Irbesartan is part of a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking angiotensin II, an enzyme that tightens the blood vessels. By blocking this substance, blood vessels are relaxed and the blood is allowed to flow more smoothly, putting less strain on the heart.

How do I take irbesartan?

Irbesartan comes as a tablet to be taken orally. It is usually taken one time per day with or without food. Take this medication at the same time every day for best results. Follow directions on your prescription label carefully. You want to make sure you are taking it exactly as directed. Your doctor may start you at a low dose of irbesartan and slowly increase your dosage amount. Irbesartan may control your symptoms, but it does not cure high blood pressure. Follow any dietary advice from your doctor or nutritionist.

Before taking irbesartan, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to irbesartan or any of the ingredients in irbesartan tablets.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You are taking other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products, especially aspirin and other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and selective COX-2 inhibitors such as celecoxib, diuretics, aliskiren, and potassium supplements.
  • You have or have ever had heart failure or kidney disease.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking irbesartan?

Possible side effects from irbesartan include diarrhea, heartburn, fatigue, and mild dizziness. Serious side effects include swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, or the extremities; a change in urination patterns, difficulty breathing or swallowing, mood changes, confusion, changes in weight, loss of appetite, vomiting, and extreme drowsiness.

Irbesartan may cause other side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you experience a serious side effect or have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of irbesartan?

If you miss a dose of irbesartan, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose of irbesartan to compensate for a missed dose.

How do I store irbesartan?

Store irbesartan tightly closed in its container and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature around 77 degrees Fahrenheit and away from excess heat and moisture. Throw away any expired medication.

What happens if I overdose on irbesartan?

If you think you have overdosed on irbesartan, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose on irbesartan is not likely but possible signs of overdose may include dizziness, slowed breathing, fainting, and an accelerated or slow heartbeat.

Warnings

Do not take irbesartan if you are pregnant. This medication may cause dizziness. Use caution when getting up from a reclining position. Stay hydrated as dehydration can cause a serious drop in blood pressure, especially when using irbesartan.
