Isosorbide Mononitrate Information:

Isosorbide mononitrate is a generic nitrate drug that is prescribed to prevent angina attacks (chest pain) in patients. This drug works to help prevent angina attacks by widening the blood vessels to make it easier for blood to flow through the blood vessels and it also makes it easier for the heart to pump.

 

Isosorbide Mononitrate tablets and extended-release tablets are to be taken orally as directed by your doctor. Consult with your doctor for specific directions on how to use this drug and take this drug exactly as prescribed.

 
 

If you are taking the extended-release tablet, do not crush, chew, or break it, as it should be swallowed whole.

Before using Isosorbide Mononitrate , tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Generlac or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have congestive heart failure;

  • you have low blood pressure; or

  • you have kidney disease, or if you are on dialysis

  • you take a diuretic

  • you are on a low-salt diet.

 

Additional precautions:

  • This medication may impair your reactions or your thinking. Be careful when driving or doing any activity that requires that you be alert while you are using this medication.

  • This medication can cause dizziness or fainting. Take care to avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position or you may feel dizzy.

  • Drinking alcohol can increase some of the side effect of isosorbide mononitrate.

Common side effects include:

 
  • feeling flush

  • headache

 
 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • lightheadedness

  • rapid or slow heart rate

  • angina pain becomes worse

  • pounding heartbeats

  • fluttering feeling in your chest

Take your missed dose of Isosorbide Mononitrate as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

 

What happens if I overdose on Isosorbide Mononitrate?

 

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Overdosing on this medication can be lethal.

 

Overdose symptoms may include:

 
  • severe dizziness or headache

  • fever

  • confusion

  • rapid or pounding heartbeats

  • vision problems

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or bloody diarrhea

  • difficulty breathing

  • sweating, or cold or clammy skin

  • fainting

  • seizure

Warnings

 
  • If you take this medicine to prevent angina, do not stop using this medicine suddenly, as doing so may cause a severe angina attack.

 
  • Do not let anyone else take your medication.
