Keppra Information:

What is keppra?

Keppra is the brand name for the generic Levetiracetam and is used as an antiepileptic drug in conjunction with other anti-seizure medications. Keppra comes in both liquid and tablet form, with the tablets available in 250mg, 500mg, 750mg, and 1000mg doses. It is unknown exactly how it works; however, Keppra uses include treatment of partial onset seizures in adults and children older than one month. It has also been shown to reduce the frequency of seizures in epileptic patients, and is used to treat tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children at least one month old.

How do I take Keppra?
Reduce the high cost of Keppra by purchasing your medications at your local pharmacy using our free Keppra coupon. Keppra tablets are taken by mouth, usually twice per day with or without food. It is best to take Keppra at the same time each day. Swallow each tablet whole, and do not split, chew or crush them. You should follow your doctor’s instructions precisely as printed on your prescription label. Your doctor will determine your required dosage based on your symptoms and your response to Keppra medication.  Do not take more or less Keppra medication at any one time or longer than your doctor prescribes.

Before taking Keppra, tell your doctor if:

  • You have kidney disease.
  • You experience suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts.
  • You or a member of your family has previously tried suicide.
  • You have had any unusual or allergic reaction to levetiracetam, other medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives.
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant.
  • You are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed.
  • You are taking any other over-the-counter medicine, prescription medicine, vitamins, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.

What are the possible side effects of taking Keppra?

Keppra side effects should be reported to your doctor. Contact your medical professional if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not subside: drowsiness, weakness, unsteady walking, coordination problems, headache, pain, forgetfulness, anxiety, agitation or hostility, dizziness, moodiness, nervousness, numbness, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or changes in skin color.

The following Keppra side effects can be serious. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience depression, hallucinating (hearing voices or seeing visions that do not exist), thoughts of killing yourself, seizures that are worse or different than the seizures you had before, fever, sore throat, and other signs of infection, double vision, itching, rash, or swelling of the face.

What if I forget to take a dose of Keppra?

If you forget a dose of Keppra and remember within a few hours of the scheduled dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next Keppra dose, however, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose.

How do I store Keppra?

Keppra should be stored in the container in which it came, tightly closed and out of the reach of children. If the original Keppra container is damaged, store in a tightly-closed container and away from excess heat and moisture. Do not store your Keppra medication in the bathroom. You should discard any unused or outdated Keppra medication. Your pharmacist can direct you as to the proper means of disposal of your medication.

What happens if I overdose on Keppra?

If you have overdosed on Keppra or you suspect overdose by someone else, contact your local poison control center. If the patient has collapsed or is not breathing, contact your local emergency response service by dialing 911. Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, agitation, aggression, decreased consciousness or loss of consciousness, and difficulty breathing.

Warnings

Do not stop taking Keppra without first talking to your doctor. Doing so may result in increased seizures.  You may have thoughts about suicide while taking Keppra, and such thoughts should be reported to your doctor immediately. You should wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID that states that you take Keppra; it is important that any treating medical care provider know that you take seizure medication.

Keppra may impair your thinking and reaction times. You should become familiar with how you react to the Keppra medication before you operate a vehicle or engage in any activity that requires your focus or concentration.
