What is Kionex?
Kionex comes in powder form for oral or rectal solution, and it is used to treat high levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia). Kionex is classified as a potassium-removing agent, and it works by removing excess amounts of potassium from the body in order to lower potassium levels.
How do I use Kionex?
Kionex comes as a powder to be mixed with water and administered as an oral suspension or rectal suspension. The recommended dose of Kionex for the treatment of hyperkalemia is 15 g (60 mL) to 60 g (240 mL), administered in one to four doses daily. Consult with your doctor for dosage and use information for the treatment of your condition.
Before using Kionex, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Kionex or to any other medications
- You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or herbal or nutritional supplements
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding
- You have low levels of potassium in your blood
- You have a blockage in the color or intestine
- You have or have had constipation
- You have had surgery to remove part or all of your bowel or surgery for any other intestinal problems
- You have recently had surgery and your bowel functioning has not yet returned to normal

What if I forgot to use a dose of Kionex?
Take your missed dose of Kionex as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
How do I store Kionex?
Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.
What happens if I overdose on Kionex?
In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.
Symptoms of overdose on Kionex may include:
- irritability or confusion
- muscle weakness
