Mefloquine Information:

What is mefloquine?

Mefloquine is a prescription drug used to prevent and treat malaria, a mosquito-borne disease that can cause a high fever, chills, and sweating. This medication works by stopping the growth of parasites in the red blood cells that cause malaria. When used to prevent malaria, people usually start taking it at least a week before traveling and for at least a month after leaving an area where malaria is common.

How do I take mefloquine?

If you are using mefloquine to treat malaria, take the pills on the schedule that your doctor has prescribed for you. If you are taking this medication to prevent malaria, your doctor will likely instruct you to take a dose once a week, on the same day each week. Take each dose with a full glass of water, or crush the tablet and mix it with water if you have difficulty swallowing it whole. Taking your dose with food may help prevent an upset stomach. If you throw up within half an hour of taking mefloquine, take another dose. If you throw up between 30 and 60 minutes of taking the medication, take another half dose. If you continue vomiting, contact your doctor to find out what to do.

Before taking mefloquine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medication
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially a blood thinner
  • You have a history of mental illness or psychosis
  • You have a seizure disorder
  • You have heart disease
  • You have liver disease
  • You have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
  • You have diabetes
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking mefloquine?

The most commonly reported side effects of mefloquine include upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, fever, and mild rash. If you have any persistent or bothersome side effects, tell your doctor. Stop taking the mefloquine drug and call your doctor immediately if you experience severe dizziness, upper stomach pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, severe headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, an irregular heart rate, or seizures. You should also stop using mefloquine and contact your doctor immediately if you have any unusual mental or mood changes, including severe anxiety or depression, suicidal thoughts, confusion, paranoia, or hallucinations.

What if I forget to take a dose of mefloquine?

If you are taking mefloquine on a once-weekly basis, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, and take the next dose at your normal scheduled time. If you forget to take a dose within one week of traveling to an area with a risk for malaria, call your doctor to find out what to do.

How do I store mefloquine?

Keep mefloquine in a tightly-sealed container out of reach of children and pets. Store it at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom.

What happens if I overdose on mefloquine?

Overdosing on mefloquine may increase your risk of serious side effects. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

In rare cases, people taking mefloquine have experienced sudden and potentially permanent psychiatric or nerve problems. Discuss your full medical history with your doctor to determine if this medication is safe for you. If your doctor does prescribe this drug, you should avoid getting any vaccinations without your doctor’s permission, since mefloquine can make live bacterial vaccines less effective. Mefloquine may cause dizziness or temporary coordination issues, so avoid driving and performing other activities that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you.

Brand Names
