What is Megace ES?
Megace ES is the drug megestrol, a manufactured version of progesterone. It is prescribed to treat loss of appetite, severe weight loss, and malnutrition in those with AIDS as well as to reduce the suffering and relieve the symptoms of women with advanced endometrial or advanced breast cancer. It works by increasing appetite in both men and women who have AIDs, and by affecting hormones in women with breast and endometrial cancer.
How do I take Megace ES?
Megace ES is administered as a concentrated suspension liquid that is taken orally once a day. Shake the bottle vigorously to thoroughly mix the liquid. The dosage strength and amount taken will depend on the patient’s medical profile. Do not stop taking this medication without medical permission.
Before taking Megace ES, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to megestrol or any of the ingredients in the Megace ES drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking indinavir or antibiotics
- You have, or have had, a stroke, a blood clot, liver or kidney disease, or diabetes
- You are having any surgery performed, including dental surgery
What are the possible side effects of taking Megace ES?

What if I forget to take a dose of Megace ES?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Megace ES, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Megace ES?
Keep Megace ES tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the suspension to freeze. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Megace ES?
If an overdose of Megace ES is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Megace ES patient assistance.
