Misoprostol Information:

What is misoprostol?

Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin most commonly prescribed to prevent the ulcers that can be caused by taking certain arthritis and pain medications (NSAIDS such as ibuprofen and aspirin). It reduces the risk of ulcers by protecting the stomach lining and reducing stomach acid secretion. There are several other misoprostol uses; in some cases, it is also inserted vaginally in hospital settings to induce labor by making the womb muscles contract.

How do I take misoprostol?

If you are prescribed misoprostol pills to prevent ulcers, you will take the tablets orally (typically four times a day, after meals and before going to bed). Misoprostol is only effective if taken regularly, so make sure you follow the instructions on your prescription carefully. If you are a woman of childbearing age, you should not start taking this medication until the second or third day of menstruation in order to ensure you are not pregnant, as misoprostol can cause birth defects.

Before taking misoprostol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or may become pregnant
  • You are breastfeeding
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have any  known allergies
  • You have or have ever had a stomach/intestinal disease
  • You regularly drink alcohol or use tobacco products

What are the possible misoprostol side effects?

Nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea are relatively common misoprostol side effects for patients who have recently started taking the medication. You may never experience these side effects, or they may go away on their own, but tell your doctor if they persist or lead to signs of dehydration, such as dizziness, mood swings, muscle weakness, decreased heart rate, or decreased amount of urine. You should also alert your doctor immediately if you vomit blood, have bloody or black stool, or experience unusually heavy vaginal bleeding.

What if I forget to take a dose of misoprostol?

Take a missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose, in which case you should continue with your normal schedule. Do not double up on misoprostol pills in order to catch up.

How do I store misoprostol?

Misoprostol pills should be kept in a dry, dark location at or below 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid storing this drug in the bathroom, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. If this medication has expired or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on misoprostol?

Overdosing on misoprostol pills can cause serious side effects, including extreme drowsiness, dizziness, seizures, or irregular heartbeats. If you suspect that you or someone in your household has overdosed, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Warnings

Misoprostol can prematurely induce labor, lead to miscarriages, or cause birth defects, so do not use this medication to treat ulcers if you are pregnant or are likely to become pregnant. Women of childbearing age should only take misoprostol if they are using a reliable birth control method (such as condoms or an oral contraceptive) and have had a negative pregnancy in the past two weeks. If you become pregnant while taking misoprostol, call your doctor right away.

Heavy use of alcohol and tobacco can raise your risk for stomach bleeding while taking misoprostol, so limit alcohol consumption and do not smoke if your doctor prescribes you this medication. Talk to your doctor to learn more.
