Monurol Information:

What is Monurol?

Monurol contains an antibiotic called fosfomycin and is used to treat bacterial urinary tract infections in women. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is not effective in treating fungal or viral infections, and it should not be used to treat any infections outside of the bladder.

How do I take Monurol?

Mix a single packet of Monurol powder with at least 4 ounces of water and drink immediately, with or without food. You should notice your UTI symptoms improving in two to three days; if you do not, contact your doctor.

Before taking Monurol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients in Monurol
  • You have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
  • You have kidney disease
  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Monurol?

Serious side effects of the Monurol drug are rare, but some people who use this medication experience headaches, nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, cold-like symptoms, or mild diarrhea. These side effects usually don’t last long, but if you have any side effects that persist or become bothersome, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any rare but serious side effects, including vaginal irritation, long-lasting abdominal pain, dark urine, jaundice, vision changes, unusual weakness, or blood in your stool.

What if I forget to take a dose of Monurol?

Since you should only take one dose of the Monurol medicine, missing a dose should not be an issue.

How do I store Monurol?

You most likely won’t need to store Monurol since it is a single-dose treatment. If you do need to store this medication for a short period of time, keep it at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not leave it anywhere that children or pets could easily access it.

What happens if I overdose on Monurol?

Overdosing on Monurol is unlikely if you only take a single dose. If you do overdose, you may experience hearing loss or a metallic taste in your mouth. Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) immediately to find out what to do.

Warnings

Do not take Monurol for any condition other than the one for which it has been prescribed. Misusing an antibiotic may cause bacteria to become more resistant to that antibiotic in the future. Limit your alcohol consumption after taking Monurol and do not drive until you know how the medication affects you, as it may cause dizziness. The Monurol drug may cause diarrhea, but do not take any anti-diarrhea medications without talking to your doctor first.
