Niacin Information:

What is Niacin?

Niacin is a generic, B-complex vitamin that is available with or without a prescription. Niacin is used with diet changes to reduce the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, levels, and the levels of other fatty substances in the blood, and to increase the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or ''good cholesterol'', in the blood. It may also be used to decrease the risk of heart attack in patients with high cholesterol who have had a heart attack. It may also be used to reduce the levels of triglycerides in patients who are at risk for developing pancreatic disease.

How do I use Niacin?

  • Niacin may cause flushing, especially when you first start taking it. Avoid drinking alcohol, hot drinks, or eating spicy foods close to the time that you take Niacin. Taking an anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen 30 minutes before you take Niacin may help reduce the flushing effect of this drug.

  • Alcohol can worsen the side effects of Niacin.
