What is Norditropin?

Norditropin is somatropin, a manufactured form of human growth hormone. It is prescribed to treat low levels of growth hormone, short stature, and growth failure. It may also be prescribed to treat short bowel syndrome and to prevent severe weight loss in those with AIDS.

How do I take Norditropin?

Norditropin is administered via subcutaneous injection. Dosing will vary among patients, depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s medical profile. Before using this medication for the first time, have your doctor demonstrate the proper technique and monitor you for any side effects. When administering this medication at home, read all of the instructions that accompanied the prescription. Inject this medication in a different part of your body each time you take it. Before taking Norditropin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to somatropin or any of the ingredients in Norditropin

What are the possible side effects of taking Norditropin?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Norditropin. Less severe symptoms include muscle or joint pain, irritation, pain, itching, or skin changes at the injection site, and rapid weight gain. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, pain, swelling, warmth, or drainage in the ears; high blood sugar; increased thirst, urination, hunger; numb or tingling fingers, hand, or wrist; dry mouth; knee or hip pain; development of a limp; severe upper stomach pain that spreads to the back; nausea; tachycardia; vomiting; fruity breath odor; sudden, severe pain behind the eyes; drowsiness; vision changes, dry skin; blurred vision; or weight loss.

What if I forget to take a dose of Norditropin?

Norditropin must be administered on a strict schedule. If you miss the scheduled dose, contact your doctor for Norditropin patient assistance. Do not take additional doses or change the dosing schedule if you miss a dose.

How do I store Norditropin?

Keep Norditropin tightly sealed in its original packaging, in the refrigerator and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze, shake, or expose this medication to direct sunlight. Do not use Norditropin if it has been frozen. Dispose of any unused or expired amounts and needles according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Norditropin?

If an overdose of Norditropin is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include headache, bodily tremors, nausea, drowsiness, cold sweats, weakness, increased hunger, dizziness, and tachycardia. Long-term overdosing may cause excessive growth.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using Norditropin. Long-term use of this medication can cause excessive growth. This drug may cause hip dislocation, alter blood sugar levels, increased pressure in the head, pancreatitis, and fluid retention. Norditropin increases the risk of cancer.
