Norvasc Information:

What is Norvasc?

Norvasc is a medication belonging to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. By relaxing or widening blood vessels, Norvasc improves blood flow. Norvasc treats angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). By working to relax the blood vessels, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood through it. Norvasc uses also include the ability to control chest pain through an increase in blood supply to the heart. Norvasc helps with the prevention of future chest pain, but does not address any chest pain once it has already started.

How do I take Norvasc?

Norvasc is an oral medication that comes in tablet form.  The typical Norvasc dosage is once a day, at the same time every day. Take this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes it. Often times, your doctor will start you out on a low dose and increase the strength as needed, depending on your body’s response. Your Norvasc dosage may vary. Do not discontinue Norvasc even if symptoms have subsided. Consult with your doctor is you wish to stop taking Norvasc.

Before taking Norvasc, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to Norvasc (amlodipine)
  • You are allergic to any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have a history of heart failure
  • You have a history of liver disease
