Otezla Information:
What is Otezla?
Otezla is a type of drug known as a PDE4 inhibitor. It blocks the action of an enzyme that causes inflammation in the body. It is used to treat plaque psoriasis, an autoimmune disease in which the growth cycle of skin cells speeds up and causes painful raised patches on the skin. Otezla helps reduce the scaliness, thickness, and redness of the affected skin. It is also used to treat psoriatic arthritis, a condition in which the tissues around joints swell, leading to stiffness and pain. Otezla is not a cure, but it can help control psoriatic arthritis and plaque psoriasis symptoms.
How do I take Otezla?
Otezla comes as a tablet that is typically taken twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Anyone with kidney disease should only take one pill per day. Take Otezla with or without food, swallowing the pill whole. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. When you first start using the Otezla drug, you will need to increase your dose gradually over a 5-day period until you reach your recommended dose.
Before taking Otezla, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to apremilast or any of the inactive ingredients in this drug
- You have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially a medication to treat seizures, HIV/AIDS, or tuberculosis
- You have kidney disease
- You have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Otezla?
In clinical studies, the most commonly reported side effects of the Otezla drug were headaches, diarrhea, nausea, and upper respiratory tract infections. Tell your doctor if you have any long-lasting or bothersome side effects. Very rarely, Otezla may cause sudden weight loss, unusual mood changes, and suicidal thoughts. If you have any of these serious side effects, contact your doctor right away. Your doctor should monitor your weight over the course of your treatment to make sure Otezla is safe for you.
What if I forget to take a dose of Otezla?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is within a few hours of your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double your dose to catch up.
How do I store Otezla?
Store Otezla at room temperature (below 86 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep the tablets away from bright light and moisture, and store your medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Otezla?
If you or someone in your household overdoses on the Otezla drug, get emergency medical attention by going to the nearest hospital or calling Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
