Picato Information:

What is Picato?

Picato is the brand name of the topical medication ingenol mebutate, a dermatological cytotoxic agent used to treat actinic keratosis. It is an immune response modifier and works by killing the fast-growing abnormal cells generated by actinic keratosis.

How do I take Picato?

Picato is a topical gel applied to an affected area of the skin. The face or scalp receive once daily applications of the 0.015% strength for three consecutive days; the trunk, arms, hands, and legs require once daily applications of the 0.05% gel for two consecutive days. Before applying, thoroughly wash and dry your hands and the targeted area. Squeeze just enough gel to cover the affected area onto your fingertips and gently massage it evenly into the skin. Wash hands after application; however, if it the hands that are being treated, wash only the fingertips. Allow the treated area to dry for fifteen minutes; do not wash or touch this section of the skin for at least six hours. Do not cover the area with bandages or other dressings.

Before taking Picato, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child
  • You are allergic to ingenol mebutate or any of the ingredients in the Picato drug
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are receiving treatment for, or have any, skin conditions, including sunburn, psoriasis, eczema, skin cancer.

What are the possible side effects of taking Picato?

Some individuals have reported Picato drug side effects. Less severe side effects include headache; irritation, pain, swelling, or itching of the skin, nose, or throat; or crusting, flaking, redness, or scaling of the skin. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your physician for assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or rash, hives, or severe itching); swollen or drooping eyelids; oozing sores, blisters, or ulcers on the skin; swelling around the eyes.

What if I forget to apply a dose of Picato?

If you forget to apply your scheduled dose of Picato, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, forego the one missed and resume the normal schedule. Do no increase the prescribed amount to compensate for the missed dose.

How do I store Picato?

Keep Picato tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the gel to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired medication in accordance with the recommendations of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Picato?

If Picato is accidently ingested, or too much was applied, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or fallen unconscious, contact Emergency Services. If Picato comes in contact with the eyes, flush them with water and seek medical help.

Warnings

Prolonged use, or applying excessive amounts, may cause severe skin reactions. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while using the Picato drug. Do not apply to sunburned skin, skin being treated with other products, skin that has undergone a surgical procedure, or skin with open wounds. Do not allow the gel to contact the eyes, mouth, vagina, or mucus membranes; avoid touching the treated skin and then touching the eyes. Do not allow treated skin to make contact with other people.
