Potassium Chloride Information:

What is potassium chloride?

Potassium chloride is a naturally-occurring mineral compound of potassium and chlorine. The body needs potassium to survive, and potassium chloride is often prescribed to treat potassium deficiencies or hypokalemia. When an individual is deficient in potassium or has hypokalemia, he or she may experience muscle cramps, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, and constipation. Severe hypokalemia can result in respiratory depression from the impairment of skeletal muscle. Some people who are awoken from leg cramping in the middle of the night may need to take potassium supplements. Potassium chloride is also used to treat skin disorders, gout and kidney stones. This medication works by reducing acidity in the blood which decreases swelling in joints and stops crystallizations from forming in the kidneys. It also increases the availability of oxygen in the blood and skin.

How do I take potassium chloride?

Potassium chloride may come as an effervescent, a liquid, a tablet, or an extended release (ER) or controlled release (CR) tablet. Follow dosing instructions given to you buy your doctor and pharmacist. Take this medication with water and food. Do not open pouches of effervescent tablets until you are ready to take them. Drop these tablets in a three or four ounce glass of cold water and allow them to dissolve completely. Drink the medication within ten minutes of dissolving the tablets.  Do not crush, chew or suck on potassium chloride ER or potassium chloride CR tablets. Doing this could result in an excessive dose of your medication.

Before taking potassium chloride, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Most people will not experience side effects from potassium chloride if it is taken with food and not taken in excess.

What if I forget to take a dose of potassium chloride?

If you miss a dose of potassium chloride, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
