Quartette Information:

What is Quartette?

Quartette is a combination of two female hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (an estrogen and a progestin, respectively), prescribed to prevent pregnancy. It is an extended-cycle form of hormonal birth control which means that the menstrual cycle will last 91 days. Those taking Quartette will only have a period once every three months. It works by preventing ovulation, changing the composition of cervical mucus to inhibit sperm, and altering the uterine lining so that a fertilized egg cannot attach to it. It may also be prescribed to treat other conditions, depending on the individual and the doctor’s recommendations.

How do I take Quartette?

Quartette is taken orally with water on a daily basis; taking it with food is optional, but doing so can reduce instances of nausea. Quartette has a 91-day cycle, and the first pill should be taken on the first day a menstrual period begins or on the Sunday immediately following its commencement. One pill should be taken daily, no more than 24 hours after taking the preceding one. Quartette is arranged in three trays, two of 28 pills and one of 35 pills. Take them in the order described in the instructions, with the third tray being the last (this tray has seven reminder pills, indicating that the prescription is expiring and will need to be refilled). Your period should start while taking these pills. Begin a new dosage cycle once the reminder pills are exhausted.

Before taking Quartette, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to estrogen, progestin, or any of the ingredients in Quartette
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements, including potassium supplements
  • You are taking birth control medications with drosperinone
  • You are taking angiotensin II antagonists, NSAIDs,  eplerenone, methotrexate, or cholestyramine
  • You are taking pyrimethamine, sulfasalazine, potassium or folate supplements, ACE inhibitors, valproic acid, or diuretics
  • You have, or have had, breast cancer
  • You have, or have had, ovarian, cervical, uterine, or endometrial cancer
  • You have hypertension, or a blood disease
  • You have abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • You have diabetes
  • You have gallbladder, liver, or kidney disease
  • You have heart disease or high cholesterol
  • You have had a stroke, a recent heart attack, or blood clots
  • You have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • You have asthma or migraine headaches
  • You smoke

What are the possible side effects of taking Quartette?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Quartette. Mild side effects include nausea, vomiting, bloating, appearance of facial hair or increased hair growth, skin darkening, weight change, freckles, menstrual cycle changes or increased menstrual flow, loss of sex drive, headaches, dizziness, hair loss, vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, or swollen, tender, or painful breasts. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), chest pain or a heavy feeling in the chest, increasingly severe migraines, sudden weakness, darkly colored urine, numbing of one side of the body, or symptoms of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of Quartette?

If you forget to take a dose of Quartette, refer directly to the information packet that came with your prescription for specific instructions. If you miss one active pill, take two on the day you remember, and continue taking one pill for the remainder of the cycle. If you miss two consecutive pills, take two for two days in a row, then take one pill per day for the rest of the cycle; back up birth control should be used for at least seven days. If three consecutive pills are missed, skip the missed ones, leaving them in the package, and resume the regular schedule. Use an alternative birth control measure for seven days; some bleeding or spotting may occur. If you forget to take a reminder pill, dispose of it and continue taking the remainder until they are finished, then begin the next cycle of Quartette.

How do I store Quartette?

Keep Quartette in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused pills according to the instructions of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Quartette?

If an overdose of Quartette is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include vaginal bleeding, nausea, and vomiting.

Warnings

Smoking while taking Quartette increases the chances of a stroke, heart attack, and blood clots, especially in those who are heavy smokers or are over 35. An alternative form of birth control may be needed when first starting to take Quartette. Because this is an extended-cycle form of birth control, your menstrual period will not be monthly, but rather every twelve weeks; however, you may have breakthrough bleeding during the first three months. Missing an active pill increases the risk of pregnancy. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Quartette. This medication does not prevent the spread of STDs, including HIV/AIDs. It may be difficult to become pregnant once you stop taking Quartette.

Brand Names

Quartette is available under different brand names including Amethia, Triphasil, Orsythia, Camrese, Daysee, Introval, Lutera, Jolessa, Portia, Quasense, Trivora, Seasonale, Lybrel, and Seasonique, among others. However, the combination of active medications may be different and one brand should not be substituted for another without written approval. The HelpRx reusable Quartette coupon, like a discount card, can lower Quartette costs by as much as 75% at the pharmacy of your choice. Also, search our site for discounts on any of these other extended cycle birth controls.
