Salvax Information:

What is Salvax?

Salvax comes in the form of foam that can be applied directly to the affected skin. Containing 6% salicylic acid, Salvax works by loosening and softening the dry, scaly, or thickened outer layer of skin associated with hyperkeratotic disorders, acne, and warts, thereby letting the infected skin shed more easily. This helps to relieve redness, itching, scaling, cracking and other symptoms associated with these skin problems.

How do I use Salvax?

Use Salvax as prescribed and directed by your doctor or healthcare provider. Check the label for exact instructions. If it is your first time using Salvax, prime the pump by shaking vigorously and then holding the can upright away from your face while pressing down on the pump for 3-5 seconds, or until the foam appears. Before each use, be sure to shake the can well. For optimal results, soak the affected area with water for at least 5 minutes before the application of the Salvax foam. To apply the foam, hold the can upright and dispense the foam onto the palm of your hand, and apply to affected area by rubbing in the foam completely. Wipe off excess foam from pump after each use, and wash your hands immediately after using Salvax foam (unless your hands are the affected area). Apply Salvax at bedtime and wash it off the following morning, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. If excess dry skin or irritation occurs, you may be able to use a mild skin lotion or cream to moisturize the area, but talk to your doctor first.

Before using Salvax, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
  • You have had a severe allergic reaction to aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or celecoxib
  • If you have any other allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • If you are taking any medicine, both prescription and nonprescription, herbal preparation, or any dietary supplements, especially anticoagulants (i.e. heparin, warfarin), methotrexate, aspirin, or sulfonylureas (i.e. tolbutamide).
  • If you currently or recently have experienced a flu-like illness (i.e. sore throat, chills, fever), chickenpox, or other types of viral infections
  • If you have recently received a flu vaccine (especially if you are a child or teenager)
  • If you have diabetes, poor blood circulation, a skin infection, or liver or kidney problems

What are the possible side effects of using Salvax?

The most common side effects associated with Salvax include temporary stinging, burning, itching, or irritation to the application site. If any of these side effects are persistent or become bothersome, contact your doctor. However, seek medical attention immediately if any of these unusual and severe side effects occur: severe burning, peeling, scaling, redness or stinging of your skin; vomiting; mood or mental changes; diarrhea; dizziness; hearing loss or ringing in the ears; nausea; tiredness; or abnormally deep or rapid breathing.

What if I forget to apply a dose of Salvax?

If you forget to take a dose of Salvax, use it as soon as possible. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not compensate your missed dose by using 2 doses at once.

How do I store Salvax?

You should store your Salvax out of reach of children and away from pets at room temperature (59-77°F, 15-25°C), but not in the bathroom. Do not freeze your Salvax, or puncture, break, or burn the can (even if it appears to be empty). Do not expose it to high heat.

What happens if I overdose on Salvax?

If you suspect your or someone you know has overdosed on Salvax, contact your local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222, or go to a nearby emergency room immediately. Symptoms of Salvax overdose may include loss of appetite; loss of hearing; nausea; mental disturbances; ringing in the ears; rapid or difficult breathing; seizures; sluggishness; vomiting; dizziness; diarrhea; agitation; or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Warnings

Be sure to use Salvax foam as directed by your doctor or healthcare provider, and carefully read the label. Do not allow the foam to come into contact with any mucous membranes, such as your eyes, or with your lips, nose, mouth, or broken or inflamed skin. If Salvax comes in contact with your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use Salvax if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to salicylic acid or any of the other ingredients. Prolonged use of Salvax over large areas, especially in patients with significant renal or hepatic impairment and children, could result in salicylism. Check with your doctor before using more than the recommended dose or for use longer than prescribed, as well as if you have a condition that covers a large area of your body. Do not use Salvax on healthy skin, or on open wounds, birthmarks, moles, genital or facial warts, or warts growing hair. In diabetes patients, Salvax may cause the results of certain urine glucose tests to be wrong; ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine or your diet.
