Scopolamine Information:

What is scopolamine?

Scopolamine is a medicine for treating nausea and vomiting from motion sickness or anesthesia effects after surgery, as well as certain stomach or intestinal conditions such as diseases related to Parkinson's or muscle spasms. It can help reduce the unpleasant effects of such diseases or those associated with the temporary states of anesthesia and motion sickness.

How do I take scopolamine?

Scopolamine is generally taken orally. It can be taken with or without food and still maintain its full pharmacological effect.

Before taking scopolamine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicines
  • You are taking an herbal preparation or dietary supplement
  • You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • You have nerve problems, prostate problems, or difficulty urinating
  • You have heart problems such as an irregular heartbeat
  • You have a hernia
  • You have glaucoma, or a predisposition to glaucoma

What are the possible side effects of taking scopolamine?

Common side effects of scopolamine use include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, and flushing. Get help from a trained medical professional immediately if you experience a severe allergic reaction, confusion, trouble speaking, difficulty urinating, hallucinations, mood or mental changes, severe drowsiness, severe dry mouth, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

What if I forget to take a dose of scopolamine?

If you happen to miss a dose of scopolamine, take your missed dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, don't take the dose you missed, simply return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

How do I store scopolamine?

Store scopolamine at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit (15 and 30 degrees Celsius). Avoid storage in the bathroom. Keep this medicine away from heat, moisture, and light, as well as out of the reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on scopolamine?

Symptoms of a scopolamine overdose may include confusion, restlessness, disorientation, dizziness, hallucinations, and memory disturbances. Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the poison control line) or get to an emergency room immediately if you or someone you know has overdosed.

Warnings

Scopolamine may cause coordination problems such as drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. These effects may worsen if you take scopolamine with alcohol or other medications. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you have learned your natural reaction to this medication. Avoid extreme heat when taking this medication as it may make you vulnerable to heat stroke and increases light sensitivity. Limit alcohol intake while you are taking scopolamine.

Brand Names

Scopolamine is the generic name of such brand name medications as Scopace and Maldemar. It is sold under a long list of additional brand names. If you have been prescribed scopolamine pills to help reduce the presence of the symptoms of gastrointestinal diseases, motion sickness, or anesthesia, make sure you also cut the prices for scopolamine across lots of US pharmacies with a HelpRx scopolamine coupon.
