What is Selegiline?

 

Selegiline is used to help control the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in patients who are taking levodopa and carbidopa combination drug.

 

This drug is a monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor, and it works by increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain.

 

Selegiline may help people with Parkinson's disease in several ways:

 
  • it helps to decrease the amount of levodopa and carbidopa combination that patients need to control symptoms

  • it stops the combination drug’s effects from wearing off between doses

  • it increased the time period that the combination drug will continue to control symptoms..

How do I use Selegiline?

 

Selegiline capsules and orally disintegrating tablets should be taken orally. The capsule is typically prescribed to be taken 2 times per day with meals. The orally disintegrating tablet is typically prescribed to be taken 1 time per day in the morning, with or without food.

 

Tell your doctor if you experience nausea, stomach pain, or dizziness while taking this medication, as your doctor may adjust the dosage of your medications.

Before using Selegiline, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Selegiline or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have or have ever had liver or kidney disease

 

Additional precautions:

 

Selegiline may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position, especially when you first start taking this medication. Take care to rise slowly from a lying position in order to avoid these side effects from occurring.

What are the possible side effects of using Selegiline?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • dizziness or lightheadedness

  • fainting

  • dry mouth

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • vomiting

  • stomach pain

  • difficulty swallowing

  • heartburn

  • gas

  • constipation

  • insomnia

  • unusual dreams

  • sleepiness

  • depression

  • pain, especially in the legs or back

  • muscle pain or muscle weakness

  • purple blotches on the skin

  • rash

  • redness, irritation, or sores in the mouth

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • severe headache

  • chest pain

  • rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • Sweating

  • sudden, severe nausea and vomiting

  • confusion

  • stiff or sore neck

  • shaking or tremors

  • hallucinations

  • breathing difficulties

What if I forget to use a dose of Selegiline?

 

Take your missed dose of Selegiline as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Selegiline?

 
 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Do not keep it in the bathroom. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Selegiline?

 

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Selegiline may include:

 
  • drowsiness, dizziness, or faintness

  • Irritability or agitation

  • hyperactivity

  • severe headache

  • hallucinations

  • jaw tightness

  • rapid and irregular pulse

  • chest pain

  • slowed breathing

  • sweating or fever

  • cold, clammy skin

  • seizure

  • coma
