Sucralfate Information:
What is sucralfate?
Sucralfate is the name of a generic medication that treats and prevents duodenal ulcers that can form in the first part of the small intestine. Sucralfate is also used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease ulcers brought on by stress. In conjunction with other medications, often an antibiotic, sucralfate can treat and also prevent the return of ulcers brought on by a bacterium known as h.pylori. Sucralfate is classified as a type of medication known as a protectant. It works by sticking to damaged ulcer tissue and protects against harmful enzymes and acid to promote healing.
How do I take sucralfate?
Sucralfate, the generic version of Carafate, comes in the form of a tablet or as a liquid. Both are taken by mouth. If using sucralfate for the treatment of ulcers, the tabs or liquid are typically taken a total of four times daily. If taking sucralfate for the prevention of ulcers from returning, the dosage drops down to twice a day. Sucralfate should be taken on an empty stomach, 2 hours after or 1 hour before food. Sucralfate should also be taken around the same time each day. Follow the directions prescribed by your doctor. In order for sucralfate to be effective, it must be taken regularly. Healing time can take up to 8 weeks. Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. This medicine works best if taken 1 hour prior to meals on an empty stomach.
Before taking sucralfate, tell your doctor if:
- You have kidney disease
- You have diabetes
- You receive tube feedings
- You are pregnant or trying to get pregnant and/or are breast-feeding.
- You are taking other prescription medications, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products you are taking or plan to take
- You have had any unusual or allergic reactions to sucralfate, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives.
What are the possible side effects of taking sucralfate?
If taking sucralfate, side effects that need to be reported to a doctor immediately include: allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue and/or any difficulty with breathing. Other side effects that do not require immediate medical attention, but should still be reported include: back pain, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, stomach upset, gas, or trouble with sleeping.
What if I forget to take a dose of sucralfate?
If you miss a dose of sucralfate, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, continue as prescribed. It is important not to take double or extra doses.
How do I store sucralfate?
Sucralfate should be stored at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and in a closed, air-tight container. Discard any unused medicine after it expires.
