Sulfacetamide Information:

What is Sulfacetamide?

Sulfacetamide is a generic drug that is available as liquid eye drops and eye ointment, and it is used to treat certain eye infections and to prevent eye infections after injuries. This drug works by stopping the growth of bacteria that causes eye infections.

How do I use Sulfacetamide?

Sulfacetamide liquid is applied as drops into the eyes, and Sulfacetamide ointment is applied to the eyes topically. Follow your doctor’s instructions for using this medication.

Before using Sulfacetamide, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic to Sulfacetamide or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

Additional precautions:

  • Sulfacetamide ointment may cause your vision to become blurred during treatment.

  • If you wear soft contact lenses and the brand of Sulfacetamide contains benzalkonium chloride, wait at least 15 minutes after using Sulfacetamide to put in your soft contact lenses.

What are the possible side effects of using Sulfacetamide?

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • stinging of the eye

  • burning of the eye

  • redness, itching, or swelling of the eye that continues for more than 48 hours

What if I forget to use a dose of Sulfacetamide?

Use your missed dose of Sulfacetamide as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

How do I store Sulfacetamide?

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.
