Sulfasalazine Information:

What is sulfasalazine?

Sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory medication, and works by reducing inflammation in Sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory medication, and works by reducing inflammation in the bowels caused by ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or other inflammatory bowel conditions. It is also used to treat symptoms of these diseases such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. In its delayed release or enteric-coated formulation (Azulfidine® EN-tabs®), it may also be prescribed for those with rheumatoid arthritis who are not finding relief from other types of medications or who cannot tolerate NSAIDS or salicylates. Sulfazine (and its brand names) is available by prescription only.

How do I take sulfasalazine?

Sulfasalazine is an oral medication, taken four times a day, preferably in intervals of eight hours or less. The tablet needs to be taken with, or immediately after, a meal or with a light snack. Do not crush the tablet and drink a full glass of water when taking a dose. Water or beverage consumption should be between eight to ten glasses per day while taking sulfasalazine. Take the medication even if you are feeling well, and speak with your doctor before discontinuing its use.

Before taking sulfasalazine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to it or medications such as aspirin, sulfa drugs, trisalicylates (Tricosal®, Trilisate®), salsalates, or other prescription drugs.
  • You are taking any non-prescription medications you may be taking including vitamins, folic acid, and digoxin (marketed as Lanoxin®), riluzole, cyclosporine, or warfarin.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking sulfasalazine?

If you experience any of the following symptoms as severe or they will not subside, report them to your doctor: upset stomach or stomach pain; vomiting; loss of appetite; headache; or diarrhea.

In addition, if you experience any of the following, discontinue taking sulfasalazine and immediately call your doctor: allergic reaction, joint or muscle aches; swelling; difficulty swallowing; sore throat; fever; pale or yellow skin; tiredness or weakness; or any unusual bleeding or bruising.

Sulfasalazine may cause other side effects, including temporary infertility in men during the course of taking the medication. However, fertility will return once sulfasalazine is no longer being taken. It may also cause the skin or urine to turn a yellow-orange color, but this is harmless.

What if I forget to take a dose of sulfasalazine?

If you forget your scheduled dose of sulfasalazine, take it as soon as you remember with a light snack followed by a full glass of water. However, if it is near the time for the next scheduled dose, forego the missed dose and continue with your normal cycle. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the one that was missed.

How do I store sulfasalazine?

Keep sulfasalazine tightly closed in its original container and away from children. Do not store it in areas subject to high heat and/or excessive moisture (including bathrooms). Outdated or expired sulfasalazine should be properly disposed of according to your pharmacist’s instructions.

What happens if I overdose on sulfasalazine?

In the event of an overdose of sulfasalazine, call poison control immediately. If the patient has stopped breathing or collapsed, call 911.

Warnings

If you have liver or kidney disease, asthma, or a urinary tract blockage, tell your physician as sulfasalazine can exacerbate them or cause serious complications. Avoid extended exposure to sunlight, and wear both skin and eye protection as sulfasalazine may cause sensitivity to sunlight.
