What is Tekamlo?
Tekamlo is an antihypertensive medication that combines aliskiren with amlodipine to help treat high blood pressure (hypertension). As a direct renin inhibitor, Aliskiren works by decreasing blood pressure-raising substances; the calcium channel blocker amlodipine relaxes blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow through the body.
How do I take Tekamlo?
Tekamlo is administered as a tablet that is taken orally with water and without regard for food; however, it should be taken at the same time every day and in the same manner as the first dose taken. The dosing frequency will be determined by your doctor based on your medical profile. Follow the instructions on the prescription exactly and do not take more or less than the prescribed amount. Swallow the medication whole; do not crush, split, or chew the tablet. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well; do not stop taking Tekamlo without medical permission.
Before taking Tekamlo, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to aliskiren, amlodipine, sulfa drugs, penicillin, or any of the ingredients in Tekamlo
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, or have had, asthma, diabetes, coronary artery disease, gout, heart attack, heart failure, an electrolyte imbalance, high cholesterol or triglycerides, kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, or systematic lupus erythematosus
- You have problems urinating
What are the possible side effects of taking Tekamlo?
Mild side effects of Tekamlo may include back pain, coughing, diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness, drowsiness, excessive tiredness, flushing, increased urination, hair loss, headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, stomach pain, swelling of the extremities, or upset stomach. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include vision changes, eye swelling, redness, or pain; dry mouth or thirst’ nausea; vomiting; drowsiness; restlessness or confusion; muscle weakness or pain; changes in heart rate; cramps; fainting; swollen or painful joints; increased or more severe chest pain; ongoing pain beginning in the stomach area or back; seizures; or unusual bleeding or bruising.
What if I forget to take a dose of Tekamlo?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Tekamlo, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or alter the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Tekamlo?
Keep Tekamlo tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any expired or unused tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Tekamlo?
If an overdose of Tekamlo is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Tekamlo. This medication may make you dizzy, lightheaded, or drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known. Tekamlo may cause orthostatic hypotension; exercise care when rising from a prone or seated position. Alcohol can exacerbate the side effects of this drug. Follow any dietary recommendations made by your doctor and avoid eating fried foods while taking this medication.
