Terbinafine Information:
What is terbinafine?
Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal. It treats certain types of fungal infections (usually infection of the fingernails or toenails) by stopping the growth of fungus.
How do I take terbinafine?
Take terbinafine with or without food once a day, unless your doctor has given you different instructions. Continue taking this medication for the full prescribed time. If you stop taking it too soon, your fungal infection may return and become more resistant to medication.
Before taking terbinafine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this drug or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have liver disease
- You have a weakened immune system or an autoimmune disorder
- You have a history of depression
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy
What are the possible side effects of taking terbinafine?
Mild side effects of terbinafine may include upset stomach, diarrhea, or temporary change in your ability to taste. These side effects don’t require medical attention unless they become severe or last a long time. However, you should get medical attention right away if you experience any rare but serious side effects, including chest pain, an irregular heart rate, difficulty breathing, persistent cough, unusual fatigue, mouth sores, vision changes, pink or bloody urine, changes in the amount of urine, or any signs of a new infection.
What if I forget to take a dose of terbinafine?
Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, you should skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Never take two doses at once.
How do I store terbinafine?
Store terbinafine at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom or anywhere that children or pets could access it. If you are no longer using terbinafine and have leftover pills, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on terbinafine?
Reported overdoses of terbinafine are rare, but when they occur, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain, frequent urination, or rash. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do if you or someone in your home is experiencing overdose symptoms.
Warnings
Don’t drink caffeinated beverages (such as coffee, tea, or soda) while taking terbinafine. This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so use sunscreen or wear protective clothing whenever you plan to be outside for an extended period.
