Vivotif Information:

What is Vivotif?

Vivotif is a typhoid vaccine that comes in the form of a capsule. Vaccines are made with weakened live bacteria; when this bacteria enters the body, antibodies form to prevent a full-blown infection. Doctors typically recommend that anyone who will be traveling to an area where typhoid is common take a vaccine like Vivotif since typhoid can be transmitted through food or water.

How do I take Vivotif?

You will likely need to start taking Vivotif at least a week before traveling to an area where you may be exposed to typhoid. Take 1 capsule per day for 4 days, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Do not take this medication with food. Make sure to swallow each capsule whole; breaking it open or chewing it may cause unwanted side effects. If a capsule looks like it is damaged (i.e. its blister pack is open, or part of the capsule has broken off), contact your doctor to find out what to do.

Before taking Vivotif, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any food or drug allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You currently have a fever or any other illness
  • You have ongoing stomach problems (such as persistent diarrhea)|You have HIV or any other condition that causes a weakened immune system
  • You have cancer
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of taking Vivotif?

Severe side effects of the Vivotif drug are rare; however, some people have reported feeling nauseated after taking this vaccine. Tell your doctor if you experience any side effects that concern you, and get emergency medical attention if you have any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling of the face, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

What if I forget to take a dose of Vivotif?

It’s important to follow a prescribed schedule when taking Vivotif. If you miss a dose, contact your doctor to find out what to do.

How do I store Vivotif?

Store Vivotif in the refrigerator, and do not remove capsules from the blister packet until you are ready to take them. Keep your medication away from bright light and moisture, and make sure children and pets cannot access the capsules. Since you will be taking this medication over the course of 4 days, you shouldn’t have to worry about long-term storage.

What happens if I overdose on Vivotif? Symptoms of an overdose are not known at this time. If you think that you or someone in your home has overdosed on the Vivotif drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

While vaccines are largely effective, they will not fully protect everyone who takes them. Therefore, you should take precautions to avoid contaminated water or food while you are traveling.
