Zelapar Information:
What is Zelapar?
Zelapar is an MAO inhibitor. It may be prescribed to patients with Parkinson’s if their treatment with levodopa/carbidopa is no longer fully effective. It slows the breakdown of certain chemicals in the brain and causes levodopa to last longer, which may help to reduce symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, and coordination problems.
How do I take Zelapar?
Your doctor will tell you how often to take Zelapar based on your condition; follow these instructions carefully. Most patients take this medication once daily before breakfast. When it’s time for a dose, remove a tablet from its packaging with dry hands. Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely, swallowing several times as it dissolves. Do not swallow the tablet whole, and don’t eat or drink anything for at least five minutes after taking a dose. Your doctor should provide you with a list of foods to avoid while you are being treated with Zelapar.
Before taking Zelapar, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements
- You have taken fluoxetine (Prozac) within the past five weeks
- You have hypertension
- You have an overactive thyroid
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have phenylketonuria
- You have a personal or family history of mental illness
- You have any heart problems
- You have had a stroke
- You have an adrenal gland tumor
- You have diabetes
- You have any bleeding problems
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Zelapar?
The Zelapar drug may cause dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, upset stomach, difficulty sleeping, constipation, or headaches. Let your doctor know if you have any side effects that concern you or last a long time. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience worsening side effects of levodopa, worsening Parkinson’s symptoms, severe lightheadedness, unusual mental or mood changes, a fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, blurred vision, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or seizures.
What if I forget to take a dose of Zelapar?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and wait until your next scheduled dose to take this medication. Never double your dose to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Zelapar?
Do not remove any Zelapar tablets from their blister packets until you are ready to take them. Store your medication in a dry place at room temperature. As with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of any children or pets in your home. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely throw it out.
What happens if I overdose on Zelapar?
Overdose symptoms can appear up to 12 hours after you have taken this medicine and may include drowsiness, confusion, restlessness, weakness, excessive sweating, a fast heart rate, or seizures. If you or someone in your home has overdosed, go to the nearest emergency room or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking Zelapar. You should also avoid all foods that are high in tyramine (ask your doctor for a list), as too much tyramine can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure. Do not perform any activities that require alertness (such as driving) until you know how this medication affects you.
