Zonalon Information:

What is Zonalon?

Zonalon is a brand name for the topical antipruritic cream doxepin, prescribed to stop the itching caused by eczema and other skin conditions. It is believed to work by blocking histamines, a substance in the body that causes itching.

How do I take Zonalon?

Zonalon is a topical cream that is applied to an affected area four times a day for up to eight days. Wash the application site with a mild soap or soap-free cleanser and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and gently massage it into the skin. Do not cover the area with any type of dressing. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap after applying the medication. Do not let Zonalon come in contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Before taking Zonalon, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to doxepin or any of the ingredients in Zonalon
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have, or have had, an enlarged prostate, urinary retention, or glaucoma
  • You are taking medications to treat arrhythmia, antihistamines, ibutilide, antidepressants, cimetidine, medications to treat a mental illness, carbamazepine, H1 agonists, or medications to treat nausea
  • You are taking MAOIs or linezolid, or have stopped taking them in the last two weeks.

What are the possible side effects of taking Zonalon?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Zonalon. Mild symptoms include swelling, drying, burning, tightening or stinging at the application site, dizziness, drowsiness, dry lips or mouth, extreme tiredness, headache, mood changes, altered taste perception, thirst, tingling in the toes or fingers, or increased itching. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction: rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing; hoarseness; fever; or flu-like symptoms.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zonalon?

If you forget to apply your scheduled dose of Zonalon, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not apply more than the prescribed amount or increase the number of applications to make up for the one missed.

How do I store Zonalon?

Keep Zonalon tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the cream to freeze. Dispose of any unused amount according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Zonalon?

If an overdose of Zonalon is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or is unconscious, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include blurred vision, chills or fever, difficulty breathing, dizziness, drowsiness, dilated pupils, fainting, arrhythmia or tachycardia, seizures, retaining urine, or an extremely dry mouth.
