Coreg Information:
What is Coreg?
Coreg is a prescription-only, cardiovascular medication. It is classified as a beta-adrenergic blocker that is used to treat heart failure and hypertension, as well as treating those who have suffered heart damage resulting from a heart attack or congestive heart failure. Coreg slows the heart rate and relaxes blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow-rate and decreasing blood pressure. It may be prescribed for use with other medications, depending on the medical profile of the patient.
How do I take Coreg?
Coreg is a prescription medication that is taken orally, with food, once or twice a day depending on the dosage and formulation. The normal Coreg starting dosage is 3.125 mg twice a day for two weeks. Your dose will then be slowly increased. Coreg dosage will greatly depend on the individual and the doctor’s recommendation. If you are taking the Coreg tablet, take it whole with water or other approved liquid; do not divide a tablet into smaller doses, without permission from your doctor. Take the medication at the same time every day to establish a routine. Do not increase or decrease the dosage without your doctor’s permission.
Before taking Coreg, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to carvedilol or any of the ingredients in Coreg medication
- You are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications – both prescription and non-prescription – or are taking any vitamins or supplements
- You have, or have had, asthma or other bronchial conditions
- You have, or have had, treatment for diabetes
- You have problems with blood flow to your extremities
- You have, or have had, hypothyroidism or low blood pressure
- You have, or have had, high levels of cholesterol
- You are taking reserpine, quinidine, clonidine, fluoxetine, rifampin, cyclosporine, or verapamil
- You are taking MAO inhibitors, oral diabetes medication, diltiazem, paroxetine, propafenone, digoxin, epinephrine, or cimetidine
What are the possible side effects of taking Coreg?
Some patients have reported side effects while taking this medication. Mild Coreg side effects include headache, coughing, gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea); weakness, feelings of being tired, dizziness, and vision changes (including drying of the eyes); sleep problems; pain in joints or tingling, numbing, or burning in the extremities. If any of these persist or worsen, contact your physician.
Severe Coreg side effects requiring immediate medical attention include loss of consciousness, signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, rash, hives, or itching); unexplained or unexpected weight gain; shortness of breath; and swelling of the extremities; arrhythmia, slowed heartbeat, or chest pain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Coreg?
If you missed your scheduled Coreg dosage, take it as soon as you remember and when you are able. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, forego the missed one and resume the normal dosing schedule; your doctor will explain what an acceptable time interval is. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for the one that was missed.
How do I store Coreg?
Keep Coreg tightly sealed in its original container, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Discuss with your pharmacist the proper and safest procedure for disposal of any expired or unused doses of this medication.
What happens if I overdose on Coreg?
If an overdose of Coreg is suspected, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Other overdose symptoms include dizziness, seizures, vomiting, breathing problems, and slowed heart rate.
