Doxycycline Monohydrate Information:
What is doxycycline monohydrate?
Doxycycline monohydrate is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis, and other ailments. Doxycycline monohydrate is also used to treat blemishes, bumps and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea but will treat facial redness. Additionally, it may be used to prevent malaria. Known as a tetracycline antibiotic, it works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Doxycycline monohydrate treats only bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Doxycycline monohydrate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, meaning it can kill several different types of bacteria.
How do I take doxycycline monohydrate?
Doxycycline monohydrate comes as a regular and a coated capsule, a tablet, a syrup, and a liquid, all taken by mouth usually once or twice a day. A full glass of water should be taken with each dose of the capsule or tablet. If your stomach becomes upset when you take doxycycline monohydrate, you may take it with food or milk; however taking your dose with food or milk may decrease the amount of medication absorbed from your stomach. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part of those directions which you do not understand. Take doxycycline monohydrate exactly as directed, and do not take more or less of it or more often than prescribed.
If you are taking doxycycline monohydrate in the syrup form, shake well before each use to mix the medication evenly. If you are taking it in any form for the prevention of malaria, start taking it 1 to 2 days before travelling to an area where there is malaria and continue taking it for 4 weeks after leaving the area where there is malaria. You should not take doxycycline monohydrate for the prevention of malaria for more than 4 months.
Continue taking doxycycline monohydrate even if you feel well. Stopping antibiotic treatment early can cause a relapse and antibiotic resistance.
