What is Ganirelix?
Ganirelix is a man-made protein that blocks the release of luteinizing hormone, which delays ovulation and increases the likelihood of becoming pregnant. It also helps regulate the body’s responses to other hormone medications and is usually taken along with FSH and hCG hormone injections.
How do I take Ganirelix?
Your doctor will show you how to properly inject Ganirelix, as you may need to give the injections to yourself at home. Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions to inject Ganirelix under your skin, and throw out each disposable needle and single-use vial of medication after you are done. Talk to your doctor to determine when to start and stop using this medication; you will likely start it several days after starting an FSH injection and discontinue it before you start an hCG injection.
Before taking Ganirelix, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to gonadotropin releasing hormone or latex rubber
- You have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You are breastfeeding
What are the possible side effects of taking Ganirelix?
Ganirelix may occasionally cause mild nausea, headache, pain that feels like menstrual cramps, fatigue, and injection site irritation. If any of these side effects last a long time or are bothersome, let your doctor know. Contact your doctor right away in the unlikely event that you experience unusual vaginal bleeding. Get immediate medical help if you experience sudden swelling of the lower abdomen, rapid weight gain, change in your normal amount of urine, or severe nausea and vomiting, as these may be signs of a rare condition called Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
What if I forget to take a dose of Ganirelix?
It is very important that you stick to the Ganirelix injection schedule that your doctor has outlined. If you do miss a dose, call your doctor immediately to find out what to do.
How do I store Ganirelix?
Store the Ganirelix vials at room temperature, out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Do not freeze this medication or store it in the bathroom. When disposing of needles after each injection, throw the needle in a puncture-proof container. Your pharmacist should be able to tell you where to get one of these containers and how to safely dispose of any unused or expired medication.
What happens if I overdose on Ganirelix?

Warnings
