Glucotrol Information:
What is Glucotrol?
Glucotrol is a blood-glucose-lowering medication used to treat Type II diabetes. It works by causing the pancreas to produce insulin, a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. It is not used for Type I diabetes, as this is a condition in which the body cannot produce insulin. If you have Type II diabetes, talk to your doctor about whether the Glucotrol drug is right for you and what else you can do to help manage your blood sugar levels.
How do I take Glucotrol?
The Glucotrol drug is available as a tablet and an extended-release tablet. The regular tablet may be taken one or more time a day, depending on the prescription, while the extended-release tablet is typically taken once a day in the morning. Patients should swallow the extended-release tablet whole, rather than breaking or chewing it.
Before taking Glucotrol, tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies
- You have a history of liver, kidney, or thyroid disease; hyponatremia; G6PD deficiency; or any hormone disorders
- You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of Glucotrol?
Some patients who take the Glucotrol drug experience side effects including an upset stomach, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, weight gain, and low blood sugar. Rare but serious side effects include dark-colored urine, unusual fatigue, sudden weight gain, swelling hands or feet, mood swings, easy bleeding, signs of infection, and seizures. Seek medical attention if you experience any of these more serious side effects, or if you have side effects that persist or worsen.
What if I forget to take a dose of Glucotrol?
You should never double your Glucotrol dosage to make up for a missed dose. Take a missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for another dose. If this is the case, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule.
How do I store Glucotrol?
Keep Glucotrol at room temperature and away from light and moisture. Store it out of sight and reach of any children or pets in your household. If you no longer need the Glucotrol drug but still have tablets left, talk to your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on Glucotrol?
Overdosing on Glucotrol can lead to unusual sweating, a fast heartbeat, shakiness, and loss of consciousness. If you overdose, call your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. If someone in your household has overdosed and is unconscious, seek emergency medical attention by calling 911.
Warnings
Do not drink alcohol while taking Glucotrol without first talking to your doctor. Alcohol can make the side effects of this medication worse or lead to additional side effects, including chest pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and mental confusion.
Because Glucotrol can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, you should avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing and sunscreen when you do go outside.
