Glucotrol Xl Information:
Glucotrol XL is an extended-release form of glipizide, a drug that is commonly prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes. It causes your pancreas to produce insulin, which prevents blood sugar levels from getting too high. By controlling your blood sugar, it reduces your risk of diabetes complications such as blindness, kidney problems, nerve problems, and loss of limbs.
Because Glucotrol XL is an extended-release drug, it is usually only taken once a day with your first meal. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully; your doctor may adjust your dose gradually. Don’t chew, crush, or open the extended-release tablets.
Before taking Glucotrol XL, tell your doctor if:
· You are allergic to glipizide or any of the inactive ingredients in Glucotrol XL
· You have kidney, liver, or thyroid disease
· You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis
· You have a G6PD deficiency
· You have a pituitary or adrenal gland disorder
· You have an intestinal blockage, chronic diarrhea, or other intestinal problems
· You have a history of heart disease
· You are malnourished
· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
You may experience mild nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, changes in stool consistency, or skin irritation after taking Glucotrol XL. Monitor all side effects and tell your doctor if you have any conditions that last a long time or become bothersome. You may notice an empty tablet shell in your stool; this is not a cause for concern as your body will have already absorbed the medicine. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any uncommon but serious side effects, including easy bruising or bleeding, fatigue, and irregular heart rate, fever, pale skin, increased sweating or thirst, severe lightheadedness, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, or upper stomach pain.
Take the forgotten dose about 30 minutes before your next meal, and resume your regular schedule for the next dose. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one.
Store Glucotrol XL in a tightly-sealed container at room temperature, and avoid exposure to bright light and moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep Glucotrol XL somewhere that children and pets can’t access. If you have leftover medication that has expired or is no longer needed, ask your pharmacist how best to dispose of it.
Overdosing on Glucotrol XL can cause dangerously low blood sugar, which can be fatal. Get medical attention right away if you believe that you or anyone in your home has overdosed. Signs of an overdose may include tremors, confusion, blurred vision, stomach pain, excessive sweating, confusion, extreme weakness, and seizures.
Warnings
Don’t drink alcohol while taking Glucotrol XL, as this may cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously low. Make sure you know the signs of low blood sugar and have a convenient source of sugar, such as hard candy or fruit juice, on hand. Make sure you can also identify the signs of high blood sugar, and tell your doctor right away if you notice any of these signs. Your doctor may need to adjust your Glucotrol XL dose. If you take colesevelam, leave at least four hours between your colesevelam and Glucotrol XL doses.
