Hydromet Information:

What is Hydromet?

Hydromet is a narcotic, anticholinergic combination hydrocodone/homatropine antitussive medicine intended for short term relief. It suppresses the urge to cough (especially dry coughs) by interfering with the cough reflex in the brain, as well as drying the secretions that cause the need to cough. That means that while Hydromet doesn't directly treat the illness behind the cough, it allows the body to get the rest it needs to heal itself. As an opiate, it isn't meant to be used for long term illnesses that also have the symptom of coughing, e.g., asthma.

How do I take Hydromet?

This medication is taken orally with or without food, either as a pill or a syrup. (The latter is more readily available in many locations.) Dosing is determined by a number of factors, so be sure to follow your doctor's prescription closely and use an accurate measuring device if taking the syrup. For adults taking Hydromet as needed, doses should be 4 to 6 hours apart and you should not take more than 6 doses within 24 hours. Children aged 6 to 12 should never have more than 3 doses within 24 hours. Never take two doses at once. Hydromet is not intended for children under the age of 6.

Before taking Hydromet, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any morphine-derivative drugs.
  • You are taking GHB (sodium oxybate), MAOIs, barbituate anesthetics, cimetidine, Naltrexone, other cough-and-cold medications, or other narcotic medications, as they may interact or interfere with Hydromet.
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements.
  • You have or recently have had food poisoning, especially if with diarrhea.
  • You have or recently have had gastro-intestinal problems, such as chronic constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, or any recent or planned surgeries.
  • You are or plan to become pregnant, or if you are breast feeding.
  • You have a history of or currently experience: glaucoma, high blood pressure, any heart problems or arteriosclerosis, kidney disease, lung or liver disease, sleep apnea, thyroid problems or disease.
  • You have any brain damage, seizure disorders, or psychiatric disorders.
  • You have or have had dependence on any substances.

What are the possible side effects of taking Hydromet?

Remember, Hydromet is an opiate and therefor can be addictive; anyone taking Hydromet over a long period of time may become dependent on the medication and should talk to their doctor immediately.

Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include: difficulty urinating, difficulty breathing, rapid or pounding heartbeat, redness in the face or other flushing, severe drowsiness, tightness in the chest, a swelling of the throat or tongue. Do not take Hydromet if pregnant or breastfeeding, and discuss your options with your doctor.

Common Hydromet side effects may include: constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea or upset stomach, blurred vision, excitement.

What if I forget to take a dose of Hydromet?

Take your dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case continue taking your doses at the normal times. Never take two doses of Hydromet at once or take more than the prescribed amount.

How do I store Hydromet?

Store both forms of Hydromet at room temperature (68°F to 77°F) and away from heat, moisture and light, such as in the bathroom.

What happens if I overdose on Hydromet?

Symptoms of overdose include but are not limited to: hallucinations or impaired mental alertness, confusion, deep sleep or coma and losing consciousness, large and unchanging pupil size, seizures. Call your local poison control center or emergency services immediately.

Warnings

Hydromet is an opiate and continued use can cause dependence and addiction.

In the elderly or anyone with other breathing problems, Hydromet may cause depressed, slow breathing that could become problematic. The drowsiness or dizziness may interfere with driving or other activities, so be sure you know how you'll react before continuing them. Hydromet can interfere with the results of certain lab tests, so always tell medical personnel if you're taking it.

Brand Names

Hydromet is comparable to the brands Tussigon and Hycodan. The generic hydrocodone / homatropine doesn't present a significant savings over these brands, however, if you download or print our free coupon or discount card, you can save 93% on Hydromet at your local pharmacy.
