What is levofloxacin?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic commonly prescribed and the patient is unable to take other antibiotics or when other antibiotics have failed. Because bacteria are successful at causing infection only when they are able to replicate and multiply, levofloxacin is able to reduce the infection by stopping the replication process. The bacterial infection is unable to spread, and blame the individual bacteria naturally die, the infection should disappear. Levofloxacin is commonly prescribed for up to two weeks, though it can be prescribed for up to two months. When taken as prescribed, levofloxacin is an effective treatment for a variety of infections, including diarrhea caused by E coli and inhalational anthrax.
How do I take levofloxacin?
Levofloxacin can be administered in a variety of ways including as a pill, as a liquid, or as an injection. Most commonly, levofloxacin is prescribed as a pill to be taken from 3 to 14 days. The strength of the prescription generally ranges from 250 to 750 mg. Levofloxacin can have strong drug interactions, so it is important not to take levofloxacin within 2 hours of taking an antacid or a mineral supplement containing iron, calcium, zinc, or magnesium.
Before taking levofloxacin, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
- You have a history of heart, lung, or kidney problems
- You are taking any medications especially those intended for heartburn relief or mineral supplements with the zinc, calcium, iron, or magnesium.
- You have a history of stomach problems, including stomach ulcers
- You are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
- You are allergic to any medication
- You are suffering from myasthenia gravis
- You have any history of central nervous system diseases or any history of seizures
What are the possible side effects of taking levofloxacin?
Common side effects of taking levofloxacin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and constipation. Less common side effects include dizziness, trouble sleeping, rash, itchiness, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, patients have experienced tendon damage. If you experience joint pain or swelling while taking levofloxacin, contact your doctor Immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of levofloxacin?
If you miss a dose of levofloxacin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How do I store levofloxacin?
Store levofloxacin in a cool, dry area. Keep it away from excess moisture and do not store it in the bathroom. Dispose of any unused or expired medication as indicated by your doctor. Do not flush excess medication. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on levofloxacin?
If you overdose on levofloxacin, contact your local emergency poison control center immediately. The most common symptom of an overdose is dizziness.
Warnings
Because levofloxacin has a high risk of interaction with other drugs, discuss all current and past medication with your doctor prior to beginning treatment. Keep a list of all medications you are taking with you at all times to give to emergency medical personnel. If you have had any serious medical conditions in the past, discuss those with your doctor prior to taking levofloxacin. The risk of tendon complications increases with age.
