Metolazone Information:

What is metolazone?

Metolazone is a diuretic drug that is used to treat edema from kidney disease or congestive heart failure. It is also used to reduce high blood pressure. Metolazone works in the kidneys by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter. This prevents water, sodium, and chloride from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream and is instead excreted as urine. This elimination of fluids lowers blood volume which decreases blood pressure and also stops water retention or edema.

How do I take metolazone?

Use a free Metolazone coupon or a discount card from HelpRx to buy your medication in your local pharmacy. Metolazone comes in the form of a tablet to be taken orally. The size of your dose will depend on your individual condition. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist. This medication is typically taken once per day at the same time every day. It may be taken with or without food, but food is recommended for sensitive stomachs. It is best to take metolazone earlier in the day, as it may disturb your sleep if taken too close to bedtime due to the need to urinate more frequently. Metolazone may be taken along with other blood pressure medications or diuretics as per your doctor’s instructions.

Before taking metolazone , tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have trouble urinating.
  • You have asthma or diabetes.
  • You have low levels of potassium, magnesium, chloride, calcium, sodium, or uric acid in the blood.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You are allergic to sulfa drugs, thiazides, or any of the ingredients in metolazone.
  • You have gout.
  • You have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners, NSAIDs, diabetes medications, oral corticosteroids, sedatives, tranquilizers, vitamin D, other diuretics or blood pressure medications, and medications for seizures.
  • Regularly drink alcoholic beverages.

What are the possible side effects of taking metolazone?

Possible side effects from metolazone include dizziness, constipation, headache, weakness, muscle cramps, and frequent urination. If you experience a severe attack of diarrhea and vomiting, report it to your doctor. This could lead to serious dehydration while taking metolazone. If you experience a serious side effect such as signs of dehydration, chest pain, swelling, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, or rapid or irregular heartbeat, tell your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of metolazone?

If you miss a dose of metolazone, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of metolazone to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store metolazone?

Store metolazone in an airtight container or original packaging at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from moisture and light, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on metolazone?

Signs of overdose on metolazone include irregular or shallow breathing, blue lips, blue nails, or pale or bluish skin, extreme fatigue, weakness, heavy legs, and fainting. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on metolazone, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the patient is not breathing or not responding, call 911.
